Excellent, that was quite an achievement.

God bless our president, Donald J. Trump. I'm sure it will be revealed that he was the mastermind behind this daring rescue. I'll be checking FOX News to confirm my thoughts. What a guy!Big RR wrote:Excellent, that was quite an achievement.

Note to Trumpy....
It is the most challenging underground rescue in history, and Thai authorities have drafted in more than 90 of the world's finest special forces soldiers.
But the spearhead of the Thai cave rescue operation has depended on seven British civilians who learnt their craft exploring the chilly waters of abandoned mines and limestone caves of England and Wales.

I thought the rescue of the south American miners a few years back seemed much more challenging.....
Re: I'm glad they found those Thai boys
Maybe(and I'm not so sure because this involved kids), but it was not as time constrained as this with the big rains coming.

Re: I'm glad they found those Thai boys
Not really. There was no water involved; and once they had located them they could supply them with air, food, water, entertainment etc through a narrow tube (around 4" IIRC). Certainly it was no picnic for the trapped men but there was every expectation that they would be rescued and there was no deadline due to water or air quality. The drilling of the escape hole was a technical miracle which I did not know was possible with that accuracy; and to me the real heroes there were the American company and the two (?) guys who operated the drill. Again and IIRC once they had drilled the hole down to the guys, they packed up and left with no fanfare and no attempt to grab any glory for themselves. Kind of like the international volunteer cave divers.wesw wrote:I thought the rescue of the south American miners a few years back seemed much more challenging.....
The point I was making in my first post is that I am an experienced SCUBA diver and have some experience of caves and squeezing through narrow (dry) gaps and passages. But I would be scared shitless of a long underwater traverse in a cave with no visibility. Those boys, some as young as 13, had to do that. And the rescuers must have known that if one of these boys got stuck they could all die. There have been plenty of incidents among cave divers where one gets stuck in a passage and the next one thinks (maybe from the struggles of the guy stuck on the rope) that he is signalling that he is through and the next one can come. Once you are into a narrow passage and find it blocked by your buddy's body there is no way you can turn around so you die too. And so does the guy after you . . . A good friend of mine died in a cave in Yorkshire 43 years ago and I haven't forgotten him.

The rescue in detail. Scroll down to "How were the boys rescued?" It appears that most of them were drugged and unconscious while being moved. Probably just as well. They probably would have died from fright and hyperventilation.

Re: I'm glad they found those Thai boys
An Australian doctor, lauded for his part in rescuing 12 young Thai footballers and their coach from a flooded cave system, has described the moment divers realised they would have to “swim” the trapped boys out of the cave.
Writing on Facebook as he prepared to return home on an Australian airforce transport plane, Richard Harris described the massive efforts by Thai and international cave divers to rescue the boys from deep within the Tham Luang cave system after they were first reached by the British divers .
Harris captured international attention after he entered the cave and then elected to stay with the trapped boys for three days.
Harris paid tribute to the former Thai navy Seal , who died during the rescue efforts delivering oxygen tanks into the cave system.
Harris, who works for South Australia’s ambulance service and is known as Harry, had been identified for his expertise in cave rescues, with British divers requesting he join the team.
“By the time we arrived on site, local divers ... had already been doing the most extraordinary dives through the cave and laying the very robust rope which made all subsequent dives to the soccer team not only possible, but safe,” wrote Harris.
“The efforts and skill of these guys in blazing this trail cannot be underestimated. Following someone else’s line is very much easier than finding your own way.
“[The first British divers] not only found the children and coach alive, but conveyed the gravity of the situation to the rest of the world and thus the rescue started in earnest.
“The four Brits then did further supply dives to the soccer players, the coach and the four Thai navy Seals which allowed them to prepare and sustain themselves for the rescue ultimately.”
Harris also described the scale of the effort that he encountered when he first arrived.

Re: I'm glad they found those Thai boys
This gets weirder. Elon Musk volunteered to help and designed some sort of mini-sub to get the boys out. When the idea was rejected as impractical (and, based on what I have read about the cave system it seems improbable that a six foot cigar tube would go around all the bends) Musk turned on the guy who actually coordinated the rescue, a Thai politician named Narongsak Osatanakorn and basically called him incompetent to judge his device. It did seem a little like grandstanding.
For some reason which is not clear, and based on no evidence that anyone else has seen, Musk then called one of the British divers who actually did participate in the rescue, a pedo(phile). It seems that this diver wasn't to be seen in the cave while Musk was there so Musk assumes that he was not involved with the rescue. Maybe he was further up the cave, or even resting between dives. Musk is sick. Maybe it's a billionaire's disease - you think you're special and should rule the world. Trump/Musk in 2020?

Re: I'm glad they found those Thai boys
I read this about this this morning in the Guardian, this Musk guy is a bit of a twat.
Elon Musk came under fire on Sunday after launching an extraordinary attack on a British diver who helped rescue the boys trapped in a flooded cave in Thailand, baselessly calling him a “pedo” on Twitter and then doubling down.
Twelve boys and their football coach were rescued from the Tham Luang cave complex by an international team and after a week of intense drama.
The chief executive of the tech giant Tesla offered to assist the rescue mission by providing a submarine. The request was turned down. Musk lashed out on Sunday, saying he would make a video proving that his “mini-sub” would have been successful and adding: “Sorry pedo guy, you really did ask for it.”
The accusation, presented without evidence or context, was directed at Vern Unsworth, a British cave explorer who recently said Musk’s attempt to help the rescue effort was a “PR stunt”. No evidence has emerged to substantiate Musk’s claim of pedophilia.
“It just had absolutely no chance of working,” Unsworth said in a widely shared interview. “He had no conception of what the cave passage was like. The submarine, I believe, was about 5ft 6in long, rigid, so it wouldn’t have gone round corners or round any obstacles.”
