You can't get there from here

Post by Gob »

Quote of the day...

A young couple stopped by the van, and were peering into their phones.

Me; "You lost, need directions?"
Him; (Strong German accent) "We are looking for the lost land of Lyonesse."
Me; "It's lost ,mate.
Him; "Ok, in that case, where is Trevescan."

Turns out they had an app with a "lost land of Lyonesse" walk on it. The app didn't tell them it's mythical/legendary.

Ancient DNA Reveals New Human History Of Eurasian Steppes
By Gemma Tarlach | May 9, 2018 12:00 pm

The grassy Eurasian steppes cover thousands of miles, from northwestern China to Hungary, creating what one researcher calls a “highway” for cultural exchange and conquest. (Credit Wikimedia Commons ence, analyzed genetic material from scores of ancient humans to create a new map of human movement, as well as the spread of language, the hepatitis B virus and horse domestication, across the sprawling Eurasian steppes. The ancient genomes sequenced for the papers — with more findings to follow, promise the authors — represent the largest collection of ancient human DNA ever studied

The Science study also uncovered evidence of two waves of migration from the western Eurasian steppes into South Asia, a topic that has been hotly debated by both archaeologists and linguists alike.

Instead, the team uncovered suggestions of two waves of migration into South Asia: a very early one prior to the Bronze Age (ruling out the Early Bronze Age Yamnaya and Afanasievo) and a second during the Late Bronze Age, 3,200-4,300 years ago, which may have introduced Indo-Iranian languages into the region.
I expected to be placed in an air force combat position such as security police, forward air control, pararescue or E.O.D. I would have liked dog handler. I had heard about the dog Nemo and was highly impressed. “SFB” is sad I didn’t end up in E.O.D.

Why are liberals such deniers of the importance the Steppes in the history of Eurasia from Europe to the Middle East, North Africa, South Asia and China? Oh yes, in ancient time North Africa was consider part of Asia.
And why is it so hard for some to accept that Eurasia is one continent?

The Steppes are not a mythical place; they are real and have been important to the world for thousands of years.

It does look nice, and a tie in with Tristan/Isolde as well (one of my favorite operas). Well worth a visit.

I think you're confused. When your mother married a Mexican and told you he was your step-father it didn't mean that you have ancestors from the steppes.

I enjoy "Yo Momma" jokes. Here's another one:

Yo momma’s so dumb, when they said it was chilly on the steppes, she grabbed a bowl.

What’s the backstory on photo #2?

Lovely, thanks! (Sorry I missed the earlier link you posted.)

I’ll have to put that on my bucket list, for sure.

Speaking of all things Cornwall, a while back you posted about that book The Salt Path, and I went looking only to find it unavailable in the US. Did you read it in regular book form, or by any chance as a shareable digital book? I would really love to read it at some point - it’s only available here as an audio book and I really don’t care for audio books, I don’t absorb them as well. Otherwise I’m wondering if I might prevail on you to pick me up and mail me a copy - I would, of course, PayPal you the funds in advance.
