Fallout

Post by MGMcAnick »

Mrs Mc and I saw the new Mission Impossible movie "Fallout" last Saturday. There is one very good chase scene where Tom Cruise (Ethan Hawk) is being chased through Paris. He is riding a BMW R-nine-T. The cops chasing him are on R1200LTPs, the police version of the BMW R1200LT. The four-wheeled BMWs in the chase range from a new M5 to a mid '80s 5-series.

Cruise is an avid BMW rider, owning several. He did a lot of his own riding in the movie, not to mention other stunts. He broke his ankle, jumping from building to building, during filming.

I wonder what BMW paid for all of that obvious product placement.

It was a pretty good movie too. Lots of action, plot twists, good cast,

I had to open the image in a new tab to see it. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Shouldn't the image just show up?

Sometimes, but some images are configured so you'll be forced to visit the host page.

I've never seen a single Mission Impossible movie; the last movie of Tom Cruise's that I saw was Vanilla Sky, and not by choice - though that movie was pretty good. I've missed pretty much every movie he's made since he trashed Brooke Shields's experience of PPD and mental illness/treatment in general. I can't get past his toxic association with the Scientology cult and his real life disgustingly narcissistic personality. Also, he's not really a very good actor.

But I'm sure the movies are pretty thrilling. I wish they'd starred someone else.

I get that, but I disagree about his acting ability. If he weren't any good, they wouldn't pay him the big bucks.

Oh I have to strongly disagree with THAT; plenty of not very good actors bring in the box office returns and THAT's why they get the big bucks, not because they are truly accomplished thespians.

I will concede that he's made a few good films where he appeared to have some better-than-average ability; Born on the 4th of July and Magnolia come to mind. But he'll never win an Oscar, I'd bet my RAV4 on that (and I love that car!).

Tom Cruise is like Julia Roberts - for the most part it's the same performance over and over again in which it's nearly impossible to forget it's Tom Cruise or Julia Roberts. She has an Oscar, but her performance for that win while good, wasn't as deserving as at least two of the other nominees that year in terms of acting quality - but her studio lobbied hard so she won.

I think that always happens with any image on IMDB.

I kind of like Julia Roberts too, but its not necessarily for her acting ability. Must be that smile.

Same thing goes for Cruise; he's perfect box office draw because many females find him attractive and males find him a believable action hero, so combined it's a perfect date movie draw. He cemented the formula in Risky Business and Top Gun and it's been on repeat ever since, with the exception of a couple of challenging roles.

I think Julia Roberts's best work was August: Osage County; a challenging role and a not glamorous one. Too bad she doesn't do more along those lines. Problem with both of these actors is that they never really give themselves opportunities to grow.

I've noticed that if the code used for an image doesn't end with a .jpg or .png .bmp or something like that, it won't show up as an image - at least not on my computer. But I've also noticed images that aren't .jpg or another compatible format will show up on my screen as the word 'Image'. When that happens I can right-click on that word and choose 'View Image' to see it.

Tom Cruise = Vin Deisel = The Rock = Ben Affleck = Will Ferrell. They are mostly interchangeable. They make everybody rich with a display of minimal talent.

What we in the UK would call a "three cock gob."

Given what I understand both 'gob' and 'cock' to mean, that term sounds vulgar, obscene, and offensive on soooooo many different levels.
Of course, it's Brit slang, so I could be entirely off the mark.  Until it was explained to me many year later, I never knew "Randy Scouse Git" (title of a 'Monkees' song from the '60s) was considered to be so offensive in the UK that it was given the name "Alternate Title" in that market.

Nope, you're right on the money, it's a vulgarity. Translates as "her mouth is capable of hosting three penises concurrently."

BB--as I recall, the second Austin powers movie (The Spy Who Shagged Me), was controversial as well, and in the UK was advertised as Austin Powers 2.

Randy Scouse Git: "horny, Liverpudlian jerk"... was taken from the 1960s British sitcom Till Death Us Do Part, in which it was regularly used, by the loud-mouthed main character Alf Garnett, played by Cockney actor Warren Mitchell, to insult his Liverpudlian ("Scouse") son-in-law, played by Tony Booth.

I agree, he has ability. But he chooses to make a lot of money playing Tom Cruise most of the time (and I also agree with BSG that it is hard for me to go watch him based on his personal life). That said, there have been many actors that play the same basic role over and over, and it is not just action heroes: John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, Jack Nicholson, etc.

I chose to make a lot of money playing me. Didn't work out as it did for Tom... :shrug
