It does make you wonder. The District of Columbia is not a state. It is a unique creation of federal law and evolving municipal governance. There have been some big changes in this during my life time. When I moved to Delaware in 1972, the District was governed by a committee of the US Congress (one member of that group was from Delaware) The residents had little power over the day to day activities of urban life that the government usually takes care of--taxi rates, public school administration, street traffic regulation. That all was a paternalistic tradition of the worst of big-city machine politics, never marred by elections.

Then a new play book was introduced with a degree of 'home-rule' Mostly because that traditional system was just a pain in the butt for congress--no glory and not enuff money, even in envelopes exchanged in parking lots, for the congress critters.

The actual residents of the District get to see how the federal government actually works, up close and personal. Funny how they vote Democrat whenever they can.

First lady Melania Trump warns of ‘destructive and harmful’ side of social media

As her husband continued to rip into his adversaries on Twitter, first lady Melania Trump on Monday warned that social media can be used in a “destructive and harmful” manner during remarks at a conference on preventing cyberbullying.

“In today’s global society, social media is an inevitable part of our children’s daily lives,” the first lady said. “It can be used in many positive ways but can also be destructive and harmful when used incorrectly.”

Her message was part of a broader initiative, Be Best, that her office launched in May on improving children’s well-being, including “the safe and responsible use of social media,” as she characterized it in Monday’s remarks.

Melania Trump made no mention of the president in her brief remarks (hardly necessary to do so, that elephant looms large in whatever room cyberbullying is being addressed) at the outset of Monday’s conference in Rockville, Md. He had spent part of his morning taking fresh aim on Twitter at special counsel Robert S. Mueller III, calling him “disgraced and discredited.”

After the first lady’s speech, President Trump was back on Twitter, calling John Brennan “the worst CIA Director in our country’s history.” (how many CIA directors would Lord Dampnut be able to name, let alone evaluate their performance)

The president’s use of Twitter to target his real and perceived enemies is well known. Only last week he prompted a new furor by referring to former White House aide Omarosa Manigault Newman as “that dog” — a term many found to be racist and misogynistic.

The first lady’s audience Monday included representatives of social media companies, federal agencies, educational organizations, youth programs and law enforcement.

She thanked them for their efforts to prevent cyberbullying and urged them to listen to children’s views on the issue.

“Let’s face it,” Trump said. “Most children are more aware of the benefits and pitfalls of social media than some adults (gee, I wonder whom she has in mind), but we still need to do all we can to provide them with information and tools for successful and safe online habits.”

Asked about the juxtaposition of the first lady’s remarks and the president’s round of aggressive tweets on Monday, Stephanie Grisham, the first lady’s communications director, said she is “aware of the criticism but it will not deter her from doing what she feels is right.”

“The President is proud of her commitment to children and encourages her in all that she does,” Grisham added in a statement.

The first lady’s broader Be Best initiative has been slow to take shape.

A week after announcing it in a Rose Garden ceremony, Trump underwent kidney surgery for what the White House described as a “benign condition.” She remained out of public sight for weeks.

More recently, Trump’s policy director, Reagan Hedlund, a former Hill staffer and National Security Council executive assistant tasked with leading the first lady’s initiatives, left her job on what was already a small staff.

I’m guessing her social media bullying focus is a passive aggressive swipe at her loathesome spouse - but nevertheless it’s a pointless waste of time and resources because her silence in the face of his blatant online bullying takes all credibility out of her actions on this issue.

I don’t feel sorry for her because she married for money and is earning it - but it sucks that she’s just one more aspect of the great national embarrassment this first family and administration constitutes. The only people who admire Melanoma are men who’d like to fuck her and shallow, materialistic women.

Isn’t it a shame that someone can write an article or book, totally make up stories and form a picture of a person that is literally the exact opposite of the fact, and get away with it without retribution or cost. Don’t know why Washington politicians don’t change libel laws?

How I wish that they would change the libel laws so that those trustworty news organizations who do their best to tell the truth (NYT, WaPO, CNN and many others) could sue the idiot who calls them 'fake news' every time they report something he does not like.

I hard Ari Fleischer (press secretary for Bush) comment on the book this AM; he basically said that Woodward would not have made anything up (and I imagine he holds no great love for him); he concedes that some who talked to him might make things up, but that he trusted Woodward's integrity. And that integrity is going to be a tough thing for Trump to sidestep, except among his most rabid supporters.

And FWIW, the last thing Trump wants is to be part of a traditional libel suit where the truth of the statements would be examined in detail; I personally would love to see that.

FEAR Great title. From what I have read about this book, in both WaPo and the NY Times. For this book Bob Woodward does have the tapes. Everything was on the record. Yesterday WaPo published the unedited transcript of a phone conversation between POTUS and Woodward, that happened after the book had been written, printed, scheduled for release. Trump starts out saying Woodward IS reliable. Then it comes out that various staffers worked hard to prevent actual, on the record, contact between Trump and Woodward. The book itself has been quoted in WaPo, and Steven Cobert last nite, stating Trump's personal lawyers went to Mueller last January to say that their client could not be interviewed because he lied all the time.

Yeah, you always know that what has been said is close to the truth when those who purportedly said them threaten libel suits and never follow through.
