Is WaPo stealing from The Onion?

Post by Burning Petard »

After more than a century of imprisonment, Barnum’s cracker creatures are roaming free — until they meet their mushy demise in the mouths of children, anyway.

After pressure from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, Nabisco has rolled out a redesign of its Barnum’s animal crackers box — which takes its name from the famed circus — that historically featured animals behind bars. Now, the box shows the animals in formation, asserting their freedom on the savanna.

As I remember it, the box looked like a circus wagon cage, and had a narrow cloth-tape handle. The pic looks like it still has a handle, but integral with the paper box. I don't remember any great apes in the animal crackers I ate.

I don't remember apes either (though I do think there were monkeys), but that one looks pretty big--if he stood up, he's be almost as tall as the giraffe. Not exactly King Kong, but maybe Gargantua?

My question about Animal Crackers has always been why are they called "crackers" at all, when in fact they are cookies...

Which is why Shirley Temple's song never made any sense...

Nobody would put those sweet little cookies in their soup...

If I recall correctly, it has to do with the amount of an ingredient (not sure which, but wither baking powder or shortening) and cookies have more than crackers. While cookies are usually sweet and crackers savory, I recall other sweet crackers when I was a kid; I would also imagine there are savory cookies (just like with biscuits, where there are sweet and savory ones).

ETA: and maybe Shirley Temple's just weird; I've always wondered about her. Cookies in her soup would be the least of her problems.

Because they were given the name by a racist. Where's the ACLU?

I'm okay with the new design, but I have to wonder why they're even holding onto the "Barnum's Animals" title - the circus and exploitation of animals is now, thankfully, a relic of the past.

By the way, there has always been a great ape among the crackers:

The mix of animals has changed over the years:
The number and variety contained in each box has varied over the years. In total, 54 different animals have been represented by animal crackers since 1902. In its current incarnation, each package contains 22 cookies consisting of a variety of animals. The most recent addition, the koala, was added in September 2002 after being chosen by consumer votes, beating out the penguin, walrus and cobra.[4]

Or maybe it's 106 different animals...

From the same Wikipedia article:
In total, 106 different animals have been featured in Barnum's Animals Crackers since 1903. The current cookies are bear, bison, camel, cougar, elephant, giraffe, gorilla, hippopotamus, hyena, kangaroo, lion, monkey, rhinoceros, seal, sheep, tiger, and zebra.[5] To celebrate its 100th anniversary, Barnum's added the koala to the menagerie in September 2002.

Are you saying that the dodo bird and the pig-footed bandicoot are no longer in the Animal Cracker zoo?

Is nothing sacred?

I may be way off base here, but I believe I detect a hint of sarcasm in that post...

Animal Crackers? Is that some specialty product from Purina who makes (name animal species here) Chow for every conceivable commercial animal. Perhaps snack food for my pet python? After all, I find very few people accept oyster crackers are made from oysters.

Perhaps a better desire that these crackers be made from Barnum. Or perhaps something really presidential.

Of course not, they're merely flavored with oysters. :D

And crab chips (by UTZ, the best chip makers in the world) are made of crab.

I think it is all pretty silly, but as liberal wacko groups go PETA is not that bad. At least, they don’t beat up people and destroy property. Well, wait a minute I take that back; I reckon all liberals are going to hell.
I expected to be placed in an air force combat position such as security police, forward air control, pararescue or E.O.D. I would have liked dog handler. I had heard about the dog Nemo and was highly impressed. “SFB” is sad I didn’t end up in E.O.D.

Why not, there are NAZIs, communists, liberals on one side and good people on the other. If I don’t say it, who will?

See there, in between Nazis and communists, you accidentally left out, "Trump, Trumpanzees, and other racist, sexist, pig-ignorant wankers".

You're welcome :)
