Actually you don't care if he's a rapist, you just don't want it to get in the way of his confirmation.

Re: And Kennedy decides to fuck us all
Why is it so important to you that THIS GUY be the one appointed to the Supreme Court? There are literally dozens of other and frankly more qualified jurists that Trump could have nominated -- including those approved by the Federalist Society, if that's the "conservative" litmus test. Rapist or not, why does it have to be Kavanaugh, who has publicly demonstrated gross partisan political bias, lack of candor and fundamental lack of appropriate judicial temperament? Why this particular hill?wesw wrote:...and now we wait.

Re: And Kennedy decides to fuck us all
Indeed. Can you name even one qualification that makes this guy the best choice? I doubt it because there are none.
The SC generally has justices who are uniquely qualified to sit on it, and I have had great respect for the majority of the justices, even those I disagreed with politically. This guy doesn't rise to anywhere near that stature, and has clearly shown himself to be unqualified during the questioning last week. Yet you continue to support him. We no longer have a legislature or executive worthy of any respect. If he is confirmed, he will sink the judiciary o the same level, and the country will be the worse for it. Be careful what you wish for.

I don t like that the media, and the Dems acted in the manner of Scooter.
it goes to liberty. and originalism.
my support goes to him.
I like my bill of rights and I plan on keeping it.
of course if he turns out to be a rapist, then that disqualifies him.
it isn t complicated.

What does that even mean???? If your reason(s) is/are "Fuck you, Democrats" and "liberty and originalism" (???) why does it matter if he's a rapist?wesw wrote:I don t like that the media, and the Dems acted in the manner of Scooter.

Re: And Kennedy decides to fuck us all
I understand you don't want the dems to "win" here, but again, why Kavanaug?. Don't his tirades and asinine accusations (like the revenge of the Clintons) make you even question his fitness?
And again, what make you support him so strongly? Certainly there are other judges and candidates with similar political leanings who would be a credit to the court. Why Kavanaugh?
As for keeping "your bill of rights", Kavanaugh hardly seems like a civil libertarian. His positions on abortion and the power of the government to infringe thos eliberties in the interest of security clearly show that. you may lose more of yoru rights than you bargain for.

People like wesw care more about making libruhl snowflakes cry than they do about preserving the integrity of institutions like SCOTUS. That’s the bottom line.

Re: And Kennedy decides to fuck us all
Just the fact that Kavanaugh's character is in question should be a good enough reason to consider another candidate. If the true goal was really to appoint a qualified and trustworthy Supreme Court Justice rather than to chalk up a "win" for the republican party, then Trump.... well... a mature president would nominate another candidate and they would already be considering someone else.
Yes, it's just as much a political game for the democrats at this point but they've brought up a serious question regarding Kavanaugh's character and there are other qualified candidates that can and should be considered.

a staffer for Sheila Jackson lee has been arrested for making public the private info of republican senators in relation to the kavanaugh nomination.

joe, they will attempt to destroy the next one too.

Hmmm:
Republican Sen. Ben Sasse drops a bombshell on the debate over Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court
Republican Sen. Ben Sasse of Nebraska gave an impassioned speech on sexual assault and the #MeToo movement on the Senate floor Wednesday night.
Sasse also dropped a bombshell about where he stands on Brett Kavanaugh, President Donald Trump's second nominee to the Supreme Court.
"I urged the president to nominate a different individual. I urged the president to nominate a woman," Sasse said.
He recounted the experiences of two personal friends he said were raped, adding that the #MeToo movement has been "complicated," but also a "very good thing."
And then Sasse turned back to Trump: "We all know that the president cannot lead us through this time."

Re: And Kennedy decides to fuck us all
WSJ report the FBI has reported it investigation and found nothing to support the allegations and nothing to indicate the nominee lied.
That is absolutely accurate and true, but not the whole truth, which should include that the FBI very carefully looked only to sources who they knew could not provide such information.

Well, a guy who has said he doesn't think Donald Trump has ever told any lies, (go ahead wes...accuse me of being dishonest for making that claim...I double dog dare yawesw wrote:turns out that the accusers lack cred.....

Suffice it to say, your nick name is never going to be "The Human Lie Detector"...
Well wes, given the nature of this, I don't know how even theoretically Dr. Ford could be proven to be "full of crap" or the allegations she has made "baseless" (unless of course she recants her charges, or gets caught on tape saying something like "wow, I really put one over on the Judiciary Committee")wesw wrote:if ms ford turns out to be full of crap,
will jim support kavanaugh?
if these accusations of sex assault are baseless
will jim support kavanaugh.
I don t know, even keen observation has it s limitations.
I'll wait to see what comes out about the FBI investigation, but I believe anybody looking for a "smoking gun" that will conclusively prove or disprove Dr. Ford's allegations is going to be SOL...after this long a period of time, it's extremely unlikely there's going to be anything like that...
If you read what I wrote at the beginning of this discussion, then you know that despite some reservations I had about Kavanaugh regarding where he might stand on issues of presidential power and presidential accountability, unlike most folks here I was supporting his nomination before this whole shit storm blew in...(and I also supported Gorsuch...being implacably and unswervingly opposed to Trump doesn't mean that I've opposed every single nomination or policy decision he's made. I've also posted about this, at some length)
And I certainly don't give a shit about whether or not Kavanaugh threw ice across a room in college , or whether he wrote a note in high school that suggested they should warn the neighbors where they would be staying for a party week in Ocean City that he and his friends were a bunch of loud drunks...(I'm a veteran of high school early summer party trips to Ocean City Md. and in my experience that would describe most of the participants...)
I'm also concerned that a backlash against the media focus on these kinds of trivial things is ginning up a significant increase in GOP voter enthusiasm for the midterms (there is a growing body of polling that supports this; particularly as regards some key senate races...but I wont bore you with that because we all know you don't believe in polls...

All of this having been said, while I'm not impressed with the small potatoes stuff, (and I'll also concede that the Swetnick allegations are looking pretty dubious given the way she keeps changing her story and also the way the supposed corroborating witnesses have evaporated) I now do have another major problem with Kavanaugh in addition to the sexual assault allegations...
And my problem is a result of Kavanaugh's performance in the hearing last week, that seems clearly to me to have been deliberately crafted to appeal to Donald Trump... (and by extension his political base...the word went out after his interview on FOX that Trump was displeased with Kavanaugh's level of combativeness, and his showing at the hearing looks like a direct response to this...he even managed to work in an attack on one of Trump's favorite personal targets; Hillary Clinton)
What that Senate hearing performance (and the motive behind it) did was revive my original concerns about how Kavanaugh would rule in cases related to Trump and his powers and privileges as President (questions about the legal extent of executive privilege, a President's obligation to honor subpoenas, etc...questions that are very likely to come before the court in the near future)...
And no matter what conclusions I might reach about the preponderance of evidence regarding the sexual assault allegations against Kavanaugh, this concern of mine is now going to remain...
You can also mark me down with Ben Sasse and a number of others who have taken the position that we could certainly have a better nominee than this one; a well qualified conservative jurist who doesn't have the allegations, demeanor, motive, and character issues that Kavanaugh has...
(We know for a fact we can have a nominee like that, because we've already had one; Neil Gorsuch)
As far as how I would vote on this nomination at this point if I were a Senator facing that decision, you can put me down as officially "undecided" (I want to see what's in the report and give it a little more thought) but definitely "leaning no"...
I couldn't agree more wes...wesw wrote:
