My first thought was, glad he came out all right. My second thought was, WTF is a 97 year old still doing behind the wheel, especially when you have drivers on staff who can take you wherever you want to go?

Independence!

One of my clients has a 97 year old friend still driving. She’s pretty sharp. Statistically the elderly are safer than the young, as I recall.

Re. SUVs = High Center of Gravity

Are SUVs prone to rollovers?
Given the right circumstances, any vehicle can roll over. However, taller, narrower vehicles such as SUVs, pickups, and vans are more susceptible than traditional cars are because they have a higher center of gravity and thus are more top-heavy. ... A single-vehicle rollover is usually not caused by a steering maneuver.

The 2 rollover accidents I've been in involved (1) a 1959 VW transporter and (2) a 1969 International Scout: both high-CoG vehicles. (Both times were in January in the Midwest on icy roads; miraculously, no one was injured in either incident. The first time my girlfriend/future wife was driving, second time I was driving, so we're even.)

BTW, my recently-deceased mother was driving until the age of 94.

How much independence does the spouse of the Sovereign have, when there are probably cars filled with security personnel surrounding him wherever he goes?

Statistically speaking, newly licensed drivers and the elderly are on a par for being the most dangerous.

Your collective inability to acknowledge this obvious truth makes you all look like fools.

It's probably 45 years since I last drove a Land Rover, and in those days the CoG was very low because the underbody suspension bits (to use the technical term) were very substantial. I never saw one turned over. Getting one stuck on Swansea beach (30 foot tides) in the face of an oncoming tide - well yes, but it wasn't me, boss.

The only place I've fished where fishing is a great physical exercise. Retreating from the advancing tide on a flattish beach, (say Cefn Sidan,) is an athletic pursuit.

Speaking of rollovers, the very funniest TV moment for me in the last 10 years was when Bubbles rolled the truck with Julian and Ricky in the back. If you are not a Trailer Park Boys fan, you need to know, before you view this, that Bubbles has an excessive fondness for cats and that Julian always has a rum and coke in his hand. They have a trailer full of weed hitched to the back and they are being followed by the cops.

Prince Philip photographed driving without seatbelt two days after car crash

British police have spoken with Prince Philip after the husband of Queen Elizabeth II was photographed apparently driving without wearing a seatbelt — just two days after he was involved in a serious car crash.

British media on Saturday published a photograph showing the 97-year-old royal driving a new Land Rover near the royal residence at Sandringham in eastern England.

Norfolk Police said “suitable words of advice have been given to the driver.”

Police said the advice given to Philip was “in line with our standard response when being made aware of such images showing this type of offense.”

Buckingham Palace didn’t comment on the images.

Philip was driving another Land Rover when he was involved in a violent collision on Thursday in which two women in a Kia car were injured. A 9-month-old baby boy in the Kia was unhurt. Philip had to be helped out of his overturned vehicle but wasn’t injured.

The palace said Friday that Philip and the queen had privately contacted the other people in the crash and exchanged good wishes.

But Emma Fairweather, who broke her wrist in the collision, told the Sunday Mirror newspaper that she had not heard from the palace.

“I still haven’t had any contact from the royal household,” she said. “Maybe he should prioritize that over test driving his new car.”

The 46-year-old said “it would mean the world to me” if Philip offered an apology.

Police haven’t disclosed who was at fault for the crash, which happened after Philip drove onto a main road from a side road near the royal family’s Sandringham estate, 100 miles (160 kilometers) north of London.

The queen and Philip have been on an extended Christmas break in Sandringham, their holiday tradition for many years.

Philip has been in generally good health and was photographed in December driving a horse-drawn carriage. He has largely retired from public life but still is occasionally seen at family occasions with the queen.

The accident — and Philip’s subsequent driving apparently without using a seatbelt — is raising questions about his continued use of public roadways.

Buckingham Palace says Philip has a valid driver’s license. There is no upper age limit for licensing drivers in Britain, although drivers over 70 are required to renew their licenses every three years and tell authorities about any medical conditions that might raise safety issues.

Philip passed a vision test Saturday as part of the investigation into the accident.

Cars entering the primary roadway from a side road always yield to cars in the primary roadway - it’s almost strict liability, like rear ending someone is. Pretty clearly Philip was at fault - glad nobody was seriously injured.

I can’t imagine how anybody in that family could drive or ride in a vehicle minus a seatbelt after what happened to Diana. :loon

I read an article this morning indicating it’s highly unusual for a royal to be without security detail upon leaving the estate; I can’t help wondering if Philip went walkabout related to dementia? I’ve suspected since he ended public appearances that it was related to a diagnosis.
