First Day Of Jury Duty

Post by dales »

They chose me (they must be desperate).

I'm not supposed to talk about the case except for the fact that the defendant (a guy originally from Louisiana) relocated to CA, went nuts, stripped off his clothes and assaulted every stud he came across.

Strange.

Your collective inability to acknowledge this obvious truth makes you all look like fools.

Get away from the studs, get away from the studs. He hates studs!

Sounds like you may have pre-judged the case just a tad there, Dale...

Shouldn't that be:

"the defendant (a guy originally from Louisiana) relocated to CA, allegedly went nuts, allegedly stripped off his clothes and allegedly assaulted every stud he came across." ? 8-)

Has it been actually stipulated that he is from Louisiana? If true, my own bias says that leaving that place is an indication of innocence. (I have read too much James Lee Burke)

Have we been able to determine that it definitely isn't liberty? 8-)

I just got a summons for jury duty myself (must report on March 8). Last time I got called, they put me in the box for individual questioning (civil trial), where I had to admit that I knew the plaintiffs' lawyers. The judge was new to civil division and didn't know me, but he didn't even let me answer the questions about how I felt about lawsuits or whether I could be fair and impartial--just kicked me off the panel.

Good thing he did. 8-)

A number of years ago I actually was seated on a jury (civil trial which involved the police, which is why I think they were desperate enough to seat me) and saw first hand how divisive a lawyer can be in a jury room. I tried to keep pretty quiet (not easy for me), but everyone knew I was a lawyer from voir dire; at one point during a recess the discussion drifted to the testimony we justheard and I suggested it would be better if we followed the judge's instructions not to discuss the case--this broke the jury into two factions--the one that said they should listen because I was a lawyer and knew what I was talking about and the other, a small one, who said they were sick and tired of listening to lawyers. Thankfully the case settled before we had to deliberate because I thought the deliberations would have been pretty terrible, after just reminding people of the judge's instructions caused that split.

I was excused today and thanked for my service.

They didn't give a reason (they don't have to) but I believe it was due to the fact that I am somewhat hearing-impaired.

Are you sure they didn't say you were enthused?

Did they give you a parting gift bag of soap, antiperspirant, and mouthwash?
