Meanwhile, as things unravel in Virginia, we the people are left with the impression that sexual assault and appearing in blackface are pretty much morally equivalent acts.

I tend to agree with Econo thus far. Part of the problem is that politicians are too accustomed to kowtowing to the mob mentality (and the moguls of media mendacity). This yere gubnor (and perhaps all of humanity) would have been better served if he'd said, "I wish I'd never done that. It was rather crass. I'm certainly not going to do it ever again. So what?"

Well, Mr. Econoline. Let me address your question. My answer is: It All Depends.
My particular vocation most recently involves a wide ranging discussion of the morality of war and other organized violence. Certain 'benchmarks' (most particularly the one typically called 'the Sermon on the Mount') seem to call for total rejection in all forms, even the clearest individual bullying or flagrant international aggression. My own personal thought experiments reflect a basic difference in potential success in non-violent passive resistance in Victorian England and in Cambodia under Pol Pot.
In American politics in during my semi-senile memory, there is also a fundamental difference between the resignation of Senator Al Franken, after winning more than 52% of the popular vote, and the continued support for our current POTUS. I would not be surprised if one of the multitude of individuals labeled 'Democratic Presidential Candidate' by the news media were to announce they were no longer running because they had been reported to not object to plastic straws in some of their greet-and-grin at local diners.
As far as I can tell, this IS mob rule. As one of my political-sci instructors stated more than 60 years ago, tyrannical dictatorship is the most democratic form of government because the mob can remove the leader at any time, no need to wait for the next election or parliamentary lack-of-confidence vote.
