Maybe this has been going on for decades...

I have a solution.
Don't eat baby food.
Don't eat baby food.
Re: fake news
If the story's not getting enough news coverage, you can blame Trump...
When the most corrupt, criminal and incompetent President in American history finally has the richly deserved impeachment chickens coming home to roost, that's going to tend to crowd out a lot of other news stories...

Re: fake news
It is all over the news, and Democratic members of Congress are demanding action. Perhaps an administration that wasn't preoccupied with covering up its own corruption would have time to devote to this file.

Well, if the lead doesn't get them maybe the arsenic, mercury, and cadmium, will.

Re: fake news
I have news for you: there is lead and cadmium and mercury and arsenic in 100% of foodstuffs. And dioxin and PCBs and anything else you could name and lots of things you can't.
I took a look at the report. The lab who did the work is a good one so I have no problems with the data. Brooks Rand in Seattle are one of the best in the country. The analytical techniques they used are state of the art although I was amused to see that for mercury, they used a procedure called cold vapor atomic fluorescence spectrophotometry. As a grad student 45 years ago I built my own CVAFS unit from cannibalized parts and £10 worth of Radio Shack electronics because I couldn't persuade the department head to cough up the £200 I needed to buy one. Still the best technique.
Most of the levels reported are well below anything which would cause me concern. Most of these - certainly lead and mercury - are less than levels from the sixties and seventies. I used to analyze tuna and various fish species from around the UK. In those days there was far less regulation of heavy metals in waste streams and food packaging.
Generally food these days is safer than it has been for several generations. Of course I can't speak for what will happen if Trump continues to dismantle EPA and scrap regulations.

Re: fake news
You want to be outraged wesw? Go watch this film:
The elements measured in baby (and other) foods are naturally occurring, but PFOAs were created by humans and purposefully introduced into the bodies of humans for profit. We ALL have them in our bodies, whether or not we ever purchased or used a Teflon product. That’s something to be outraged about, and the fact that this kind of indiscriminate poisoning of people continues as we speak because profits for the few outweigh the wellbeing of the many is something to get your pants in a twist about.
Movie is available on Netflix, Amazon, YouTube.

3M voluntarily ended production and sale of Scotchguard when they saw the data on breakdown products turning up in the artic in the 1990s.

Re: fake news
And now they’re using another untested and unregulated chemical formulation with every bit as much potential to be destructive to environment and human health.
Thanks for playing, though.

Re: fake news
3M introduced perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS) as the 'new' Scotchgard. It's hardly untested and unregulated. I've read some of the toxicology data and it appears to be at least safer than the old one.
I'm not on the habit of defending chemical companies, but both EPA Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) (at least prior to Trump) and EU regulations (REACH) for introduction of new chemicals are pretty good. They don't get everything; and I think they are still behind the times for endocrine disruption, but I've dealt with many of the big chemical companies in US and Europe and even some of the Chinese ones over the last few years. What I have noticed is that the scientists who are put in charge of getting the toxicology testing done (they have to use third parties - they generally can't do it themselves) want to understand the dangers as much as anyone (they have kids too) and I have never had pressure from a chemical company to downplay a toxicology report. I'm sure it happens; but the old days of the chemical companies releasing whatever toxic substances they want are gone. Good riddance.

Re: fake news
Sorry, but I strongly disagree with your assessment. There is an entire non-frivolous tort industry built around the fast and loose use and release of chemical compounds nearly entirely unregulated by government agencies that are criminally understaffed and underresourced - even IF they had the legal teeth to inspect or regulate, where in many cases (the most ubiquitous being the whole ‘fragrance’ loophole) they don’t even.
And please don’t give me the whole stupid line about how chemists have children too, blah blah blah. I’ll laud the whistleblowers when they blow the whistle, but in your industry as in many others there are countless drones or patsies or greedy ambitious ladder-climbers or whatever you want to call them that stand by and do nothing while people are poisoned for profit. Just like in Big Tobacco, just like in Big Pharma. The truth of that has been revealed hundreds of times over by the lawsuits that force the release of internal memos signed by chemists and in house counsel alike, strategizing how to hide the source of the harm from the people being harmed. The chemical industry gets no pats on the head from this corner.
And Gen-X is not considered safe, it is currently being tested and showing similar tumor growth and other issues that C-8 caused - and it’s in the waters now just like C-8.
