Where's O-n-W?

Post by Gob »

Anyone is touch with him?

I know he was quitting the booze and smokes, and may have gone into seclusion away from temptation, which may mean he doesn't have net access.

Can anyone give us a heads up?

Hi I'm oldr_n_wsr and I'm an alcoholic.
Been in rehab the last 8 days and just got out yesterday (sunday Feb, 27). Going to out-patient therapy along with AA 5-7 days a week. (been going to AA every friday for the last 6 months but I was not committed) Could have gone for another 28 day rehab stay at a long term facility but I have to get back out there and get a job.

Most of those in this "crisis" house have absolutely nothing and welcome going to a 28 day rehab place as then they can collect their welfare/foodstamps and not have to spend any of it as the rehab feeds and clothes you for free (also the cost is nothing). When they get out they have a month of welfare and foodstamps saved up.

Me, I have a house, a wife and kids to support. While I do have enough savings to easily carry us for a month (actually I have enough for a year before I have to start hitting long term investments) I need to get "back out there".

Got a lead from a head hunter but yahoo is being a pain today (updating or something like that) so I can't check it out just yet.

And the place had no internet other than in the offices and they wouldn't let me check my yahoo account that I use for job possibilities. I tried to explain to the "staff" that isn't it in the "clients" best interest to be checking on job possibilities before they leave rehab? And where are all the jobs posted now-a-days? They didn't seem to agree, but they did ask me to try and fix a printer driver problem. I tried to make them a deal, 1/2 hour on the net to check/respond to any job possibilities (and I did get a possibility from a head hunter who had called the house and my wife relayed the message) they could monitor me. But they said they couldn't so I told them I design electronics, I don't fix them (even though I knew what was wrong just by looking at her screen, she mounted a printer that didn't exist. They only had one printer which was an HP and she was trying to print to some cannon printer) :fu

Thanks
Been sober for over a week now. Had two-a-day AA meetings while in rehab, going to one meeting tonight. Trying to catch up on "outside" life today (you people here and elswhere on the net, bills, COBRA, unemployment, etc. )

All the best to you oldr, you're one of the good guys...

I think it's very courageous of you to decide to take this on at this point in your life...

All I can say is that you must be one very "high functioning" alcoholic to have achieved as much as you have in your life, for which you have every reason to be proud.

Thanks for "sharing" (as they say in AA). The smoking is not a problem as the chantix takes away all cravings and even if you do decide to have a butt, it has no effect on you, so it's "why did I bother".

Well thanks on that.
And I have been told I am a "functional alcoholic" as was my mother and one of her brothers. Her other brother was a "black out" alcoholic and you never knew what you were going to get. Both her parents were alcoholics so I guess it's in my genes (not to make an excuse as I chose to drink and chose to drink to excess).

One day at a time. I'm sober right now, plan to be sober for the rest of the day. Tomorrow is tomorrow, cross that bridge tomorrow.
Got an AA meeting tonight with my home group I have been meeting with every friday. Turns out they meet on monday also.

Yesterday, I was feeling a little anxious and scared about "getting out" and what I will encounter and low and behold, a few guys from my home group showed up at the rehab center to conduct the early afternoon AA meeting. Talked to them and they gave me the courage and positive attitude that I needed at that time. Sometimes things just work out (that's the agnostic in me speaking).

Anyway, thanks for whatever support you give.
Will keep you posted on my journey.

I will miss drinking but I won't miss being drunk[

Pretty surprising news to learn you are an alcoholic. The job thing, I thought you had a job? Did I miss a few posts?

Good luck with it all in any case.

Without wanting to get all "American"* about this, I'm proud to know you O-n-W. It's getting to know people like you, and 90% of the others who post here which make this sort of board a more than worthwhile endeavour.

Best of luck with the recovery, best of luck with the job hunt, but most off all best of luck with rebuilding your life.

I must admit I'm surprised how many, open and honest, ex-drinkers we have here. While I've always been a heavy drinker, I've never (yet) considered myself an "alcoholic". Funnily enough, this year I've cut back my drinking to a couple of wines two or three times a week, just because I had no desire to drink any more.

How do people know that they have gone too far down that road, and need help?

*You know, all melodramatic and gushy. I have to keep my anti-American credit at the Bank of Obnoxious Welsh Bastard, account well topped up here. ;)

oldr,

Thanks so much for having the courage to share all that with us. Your willingess to be open about your alcohol abuse correlates highly with the best potential for being successful in conquering it.

One day at a time - I'm glad you are sober today! :D

Hugs,

I did have a job until 2/15/11 when I was terminated. They found an "inappropriate" file on my computer and still being on probation it's one strike and you're out. Don't remember downloading it. They showed me the pictures and I know I never opened it on my work computer. A buddy of mine is known to send me porno to my yahoo account and he indicates it as such. I either delete it or put it into a seperate mailbox on my yahoo account. This file must have been from someone else and I saved it to look at later. Had I opened it I would have immediately deleted it.

And I never drank at work however, after work is a different story.

Thanks everyone.

Find a GOOD sponsor and remember AA has millions of people who have trod the well worn path before you.

My sponsor means my life to me (literally).

Your collective inability to acknowledge this obvious truth makes you all look like fools.

Wow....

With no complaints from anyone, these Mrs. Kravitzes have nothing better to do with their time than to just go into their employee's computers hunting around for downloaded files that violate their porno policy....what a bunch of micromanaging little prigs....

You're better off, oldr....

Folks like that probably also have video monitors in the rest rooms....

Good on you Older, thX for thinking of us. You're being very thoughtful for being in such a tough situation. If you wanna send me a PM anytime, and we can chat alkie to alkie, OK? I got the addiction, along the same way you did.

What I've discovered that is very helpful is L-glutamine, which is non-prescription since it's considered a supplement. Yes, it's an amino acid that is typically used in body-building and muscle growth, but also as an added side benefit it cuts the alcohol & sugar cravings significantly. (I'm sure that's not widely known, because drug companies wouldn't profit from it ;) ) ...and don't go down to GNC or some other 'vitamin/health food store' to find it. They'll try to sell you a lot of other over-priced 'mulit-enhancement crap'! just go online and order the straight L-glutamine, this is all you have to do;
Further, Glutamine is a glycogenic amino acid which means it can convert to sugar for energy production, a process called gluconeogenesis. It is the most important such substance.
These blood sugar stabilizing effects may partially explain why it decreases alcohol cravings, as well as sugar cravings. In studies with alcoholics, 2000-3000 mg 3 times daily decreased the desire to drink, decreased anxiety, & improved sleep. It works best given between meals. Has been used for this purpose in daily doses from 6000-15,000 mg in 3 divided doses. Use upon arising, mid-morning & mid-afternoon between meals.
