I’m no fan of Mitt Romney, but I was impressed with the clip I saw of his speech on the senate floor. I suspect he is the only senator who actually grappled with the requirements of his juror oath. I’m glad he cares about the judgments of history, and to be able to justify his vote to his grandchildren.

I found myself welling up when I read this. The back story is that a doctor in China - Dr. Li Wenliang - warned of the coronavirus and its potential for growing out of control and was punished by the Chinese authorities for rumor mongering. He has since died of coronavirus. The 'rumor-mongering' stems from a warning he gave fellow students in a chatroom on December 30th. Just five weeks ago. There is now a very unusual and very public backlash in China against the authorities. Weibo is the Chinese Facebook equivalent.

(From NYT)-The Weibo account of Shandong Province’s law enforcement body posted a portrait of Mr. Li with two sentences that have been circulating online: “Heroes don’t fall from the sky. They’re just ordinary people who stepped forward." (My bolding.)

My point is that we seem to lack these heroes here among the Republican Party. Yes I can well understand that in issues such as taxes Trump is providing them what they want. (I got my taxes filed already this year and I too am a beneficiary (not by much but certainly some) of the new tax regime.) Maybe Mitt Romney can be that hero who breaks the dam; but we are scraping rock bottom if we rely on the likes of him. John Bolton will of course try to assume the hero mantle once his book comes out but it's all too little too late.

The last post in this thread was just three months ago. The first recorded CoV death in the US was Feb 26, still almost 3 weeks away (but California has since recorded a Santa Clara death on Feb 6). Trump of course was 'exonerated' by the Senate on Feb 5.

The meaning of the word 'exonerate' seems to have changed: I see that the Bridgegate folk and certainly Trump in a Twit:

“Congratulations to former Governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie, and all others involved, on a complete and total exoneration (with a 9-0 vote by the U.S. Supreme Court) on the Obama DOJ Scam referred to as ‘Bridgegate,'"

This despite the SCOTUS ruling:

“As Kelly’s own lawyer acknowledged, this case involves an ‘abuse of power,’ she [Kagan] wrote. “The evidence the jury heard no doubt shows wrongdoing—deception, corruption, abuse of power. But the federal fraud statutes at issue do not criminalize all such conduct."

We are six months from the next Presidential election. The questions I wanted Mueller to address were the following in this order: (1) did Russia (or anyone else) attempt to influence the result of the 2016 election through ads, through messing with the numbers in some way, and/or through spreading false information about one of the candidates; (2) if yes, can we quantify the results of that attempt; and (3) did Trump and/or his minions conspire or collude or condone these attempts. I think (and it's not just me - the US intelligence apparatus seems to be unanimous in this) the answer to (1) is clear; I don't know if anyone has made a real attempt to answer (2) but it's not unreasonable, given the closeness of the vote, that the effect was substantial; and (3) we've seen smoking guns (DJT Jr.'s email, for example) which convinces me that there was at least condonement. I would like some journalist to ask the president - given that there is near unanimous agreement that the Russians tried to interfere, what are you doing to address that?

In a telecon with Putin yesterday, Trump tells us

I said, "You know, it's a very appropriate time, because things are falling out now and coming in line showing what a hoax this whole investigation was, it was a total disgrace, and I wouldn't be surprised if you see a lot of things happen over the next number of weeks.
