Justice finally caught up with Harvey Weinstein.

Thank you (which is barely adequate) to all the women who stood up and spoke out, and the men who supported them.

A murder in Germany would not get a sentence that long. I'm glad he is convicted and I'm glad he is going to prison but that does seem excessive.

But he didn't just kill his victims.  That would have been an over-and-done type of thing.

No, he hurt their feelings, and that's something that the victims apparently just can't live with or ever get over.  So to make an example of him — and because we have moved on from the ancient practice of gibbeting an offender; we don't have a penal colony in Australia or Devil's Island like the British or French had to send him to; and we don't have a king (despite Donald Trump's actions to date) to officially banish him from the country — he will be forcibly held in confinement, ostracized by society, and made to wallow in his ignominy for what will be effectively the rest of his life.

Or until the #METOO mob moves on to their next target.

Oh fuck you, BB. You are such a loathesome piece of shit. No, I didn’t miss you one bit. Please go out in public as much as possible and lick the door handles everywhere you go.

There was someone commenting on TV today that the maximum consecutive sentence he could have received on the two counts was 29 years, so the judge went pretty close to the max, in part by taking into account something like 36 prior bad acts that were able to be introduced at trial.

I think one lesson we have learned from Harvey Weinstein is that rape is rape. Not all rapist jump out of the bushes - in just the same way that not all thieves do it with violence. Bernie Madoff never held a gun to anyone's head but he is just as much (actually a lot more) of a thief as someone who enters a bank with a gun.

JFC BB and Rube.

Go play in traffic, both of you. Miserable teeny assholes.

Andy, rape has *always* been rape. It’s just that now perhaps you men might believe us. Although given the comments above, probably not.

Wow BB...

Is that really how you want to characterize forcible rape?

Perhaps you'd like to re-think that and walk it back...Maybe get your wife's opinion on the subject...

I was surprised at the sentence, but I fully approve. As many legal pundits have pointed out, Weinstein was hardly your typical "first offender". He's a serial sexual predator who raped and assaulted dozens of women over four decades and who used his wealth and power to get away with it. He deserves to die in prison; good riddance.

Quite right too. Are we supposed to believe that age is an excuse for a lesser punishment when we'd be happy the book was thrown at someone younger for the same vile acts? B.S. He avoided punishment for decades. His victims did not escape pain and anguish while he was still living it up and committing more assaults and crimes. His comeuppance had to await a change in the way society (at least, a just society) views attacks on women and even more so, the end of the old-boy silent embargo upon their being believed and not allowed to be shamefully exploited over and again.
For Christianity, by identifying truth with faith, must teach-and, properly understood, does teach-that any interference with the truth is immoral. A Christian with faith has nothing to fear from the facts

Wife? You realize he hasn’t even ever been in a relationship. Or were you just being ironic? And yes, it explains a lot....

Indeed; if you want to have sympathy for anyone, have it for his victims. This serial asshole deserves none.

Guinevere, I don't know what my having or not having a personal relationship with anyone has to do with things.  You are correct in that I am not and have never been married, and I'm so confused as to what constitutes a "relationship" these days — does that mean I have feelings for someone (which I have) and we meet and enjoy each other's company in a non-sexual manner; or does it mean that I have to be sharing living quarters including a bedroom and bathroom with someone; or does it mean that I have "friend with benefits" status with someone and we are banging each other like a screen door in a high wind? — that I'm just going to throw up my hands on your assertion that I haven't even ever been in a relationship.

I freely admit that I was not following the Weinstein case as closely as I might have been.  I was not aware that these rapes were supposed to have been violent acts; it was my assumption based on the early accusations that he had been using his position as a Hollywood mogul to his advantage with women who assumed that submitting to his advances and satisfying his requests would lead to bigger and better things in their career.  The classic "casting couch" quid pro quo scenario, in other words.

This to me is not rape nor is it sexual assault.  It's an attempt to gain an edge, an advantage, using whatever means and methods are at hand, by BOTH parties — Weinstein in order to get his willie wet; the actresses in order to land that hoped-for break-out role.

It is also a matter of record that these actions were not recent occurrences. They allegedly happened up to three decades ago but were not reported at the time but were trotted out at a much later date. Am I supposed to assume that women do not know what is rape and what isn't; or is it the new policy that an accusation of impropriety can be made by the supposed victim at any time following the alleged offense?

And considering that he was found not guilty of the more serious charges — first-degree rape and two counts of predatory sexual assault — the jury seems to have been thinking along much the same lines as was I.

Now if you or any other poster wants to condemn me for having a different viewpoint, go ahead, I can take it.  And I will not threaten to put anyone on "ignore" or respond to anyone with a terse "fuck you" while I go run off into a corner and sulk.

Pretty much everything you "assume" about the case is wrong, so perhaps you should just shut up now. Actually you should have shut up a long time ago, but that ship has sailed.

Let’s all take a deep breath and calm down. Times are tough right now with the world full of sick people coughing on each other and toilet paper in short supply. We’ve got to focus on keeping each other alive and set aside our differences.

I love you guys.... sniff 😢 🤧....

BB--using your assumption as a basis, do you think that their "submission" was also because they feared being blackballed in an industry where this man held significant power? That they were not trying to get an advantage, but avoid his retribution of they did not "submit"? This was not a business deal, but rape, much as the employer who threatens to fire a woman if she does not submit is rape.

And then I suggest you look at the trascript of the testimony--this man did a lot more than that. The victims were not enterprising women prostituting themselves for a business advantage, and the jury clearly understood that.

This idiot deserves a lot more punishment than he got.
