US CENSUS 2020

Post by dales »

Just completed it online.

I feel so much better knowing that I really count.

Your collective inability to acknowledge this obvious truth makes you all look like fools.

Yes I did mine on line: address, names, DOB, ethnicity. Took about 10 minutes.

In 2000 (I think) we got the long form - asked for a lot more info. Occupation, education level, that sort of thing. IIRC something like 10% of the population got the long form.

I was astonished by the confirmation number when I submitted it. It consisted of 23 digits and 8 letters. I calculated that the number of permutations is 10^23 x 26^8 = 1.73 x 10^34.

That's a lot.

I too did mine online. I claimed my spouse's race was white. For myself I declared my race was human. Looked to me to only want data for white, black, brown, other with none of them defined.

Can you claim "Welsh" as your race over there? (Serious question.)

That'd get you a rare bit in trouble, plus we don't have enough consonants to go round as it is.

I always though Welsh was the sound a wellie makes when it's full of water.

Sadly, Margaretta and I cannot be part of the census. Formally, because we are living overseas and not working for the military nor are we civilian employees of the gov't. Our usual place of domicile is a house in South Africa; altho' we have a US address, we are not actually living in it on regular basis. We can't claim to be temporarily away on vacation.

Technically (and IRL) we can't fill it out on-line because the website recognizes a foreign ISP and rewards us with the sound of silence. And I don't mean the fabulous hit of the Garfunkel twins. Just like the Ohio BMV to which I must phone to find out what happens to my wife's D/L if we can't get back to the USA in June when it expires. (Answer: it expires and even the traffic cops in SA might notice when they stop us).

But, yes, you could list Welsh.

Interesting, thanks;
What is Person 1’s race?
Mark X one or more boxes AND print origins

White – Print, for example, German, Irish, English, Italian,
Lebanese, Egyptian, etc.

Some other race – Print race or origin.
So, white Welsh.

(Since when have Lebanese and Egyptians been white? They are more olive than white.)

They live near the White Nile?

I clicked WHITE, but forgot all about my Bohemian grandmother when it came to listing national origins. Sorry Grandma. Maybe I'd have remembered you if you hadn't died several years before I was born.

Mrs. Mc and I did the census with a live census taker in our living room in 1990. The lady said that once were were on the "long form" we would be on it every ten years. I recall filling it out one other time, but I don't know if that was in 2000, or 2010. We have not moved since 1983. Those forms were mailed in IIRC. Has anyone else had that "long form" experience?

My mother worked as a door to door, more like farm to farm, census taker in 1960. Wow, 60 years ago. I went with her a couple of Saturdays. There was a little girl I went to high school with a few years later on one of the farms we visited. I didn't remember that until I recognized that farm nine years later when I went to pick her up for our first date. She'd changed. We chased each other, much more off than on, for about ten years, and were dating when I met Mrs Mc. I know a good thing when I see one, so I stopped dating her right away. Time flies when you're having fun.

Short form for me, filled out yesterday afternoon in 5-10 mins.

Meade, most states are extending DLs by 60 days because of the lack of access to the RMV. I realize that may not be helpful in SA, but perhaps some kind if letter or copy of any related order (in MA it is by order of the Governor).

I’m assuming Ohio doesn’t have on-line renewals?

What a PITA and just another complication of this entire mess.

Sadly, Ohio doesn't do on-line renewals. Maybe something to do with the eye test? Anyway, I can't get on-line even if they did!

If we can't fly to the USA in June (as is already booked) then . . . well, then.

My confirmation number consisted of 16 numbers and 16 letters (besides the hyphens). Since that mix is different from yours, Andy, I'm guessing that that means any individual character can be either a letter or a number...so the number of permutations would then be 36³² (=63,340,286,662,973,277,706,162,286,946,811,886,609,896,461,828,096)

ETA: I found a nice exponent calculator here.

Just finished it. Glad to help out and let them know about the 32 people living with me; a mixture of refrigerants, alpha centaurians, memies. But all are brothers and sisters in the great buddhist family.

Looking forward to seeing someone in person presently. Heh heh heh.
