Many have said it better than I could.

He will be missed.
Yes, that's about all I can say. Such sad news.
For Christianity, by identifying truth with faith, must teach-and, properly understood, does teach-that any interference with the truth is immoral. A Christian with faith has nothing to fear from the facts

Shocked and saddened by this. One of the few (probably the only) person on this board that I'd met in person, at a bar in downtown SF 21 years ago.

I will miss his unique perspective.

Farewell to a friend

The best practice is to keep any personally identifying information/links off the public forum, and instead should be shared by PM or email/FB etc. Even after passing, he and we all should continue to have as much anonymity as we wish to provide for ourselves. That's my view, at least.
That's not my view, and I totally disagree. Jim made a few FtF appearances along the way so it shows his need for anonymity was strictly an internet/online forum thing. Unless, of course, he came to these get-togethers with a paper bag over his head. We know that was not the case.

Why should his anonymous status be upheld for only those who never met him?

If I find something pertaining to Jim's life and death I am going to post it for all to see... and remember.

For a Republican he proved himself to be an honorable, and likeable, person who died way too soon.

I'm very sorry we never had a chance to commiserate about aggressive cancer. I'm sure it would have been therapeutic for both of us. Things are always better when we know we're not alone.

He has a wife, and he has children, and there is no reason for those of us who had no RL relationship with Jim (that includes me) to be made privy to their identity by posting identifying information about him online.

If someone who does not know his RL identity feels a need to send condolences, or whatever, they can do so through someone with whom he had RL contact. I'm sure any number of people would be happy to do so.

If you say so.

I guess we'll just agree to disagree.

No. What will happen Ray is any post which gives personal information on Jim and /or his family, without having the permission of the bereaved family to do so, will be deleted.

It's not all about you.

Ray, I've reached out to someone I've met on this board to send flowers if the funeral arrangements become known. I think Scooter's suggestion was appropriate.

I know you met BobB sometime after the DC get together. BobB is on FB if that helps. So is Guin.
Thank you RBG wherever you are!

IF there is going to be a "group card" or whatever, I'm in. My company has gone to using "kudo boards" to create group virtual cards people can sign.

Or if someone with LJ's real life info is willing to shuttle a condolences card from me and is willing to share via PM their own info, I'll be glad to send one along to you.

I PM'd you with details. Still sitting in my "outbox" so I'm not sure if I did something incorrectly or if that all processes on a schedule.

This hits hard, so it's taken me a couple of days to come up with anything at all to say. I've known Jim, in the guise of his online persona, for more than 20 years: here, at "Smitty's"/Le Chat House, at the Cyber Soap Box, and at the Car Talk/Cafe Dartre forums. I never met him in person, and I'm sorry for that, but I'm glad I met him online. Everyone else here has done a better job than I could expressing their feelings (I've always been really lousy at condolences), so I won't try to add anything more, other than that I agree with all of you. Especially this

He will be missed for his quality of thinking and writing, his usual good humor, and his love of debate and willingness to point out lazy or specious posts. It is a sad day for this forum, and hard to imagine it without his prolific and interesting posts. Thanks Jim for making this a better place.
And this

This is the worst and saddest news I have had in a long while.
I'll miss him a lot here.

Hey all - I have created a "Kudo Board" to put memories and notes of condolences to Lord Jim's family. It's basically like a virtual group greeting card/poster board where you can put your own message. If there is interest, I can share the URL here and you can create your own message on it. The final board can then be sent via email to LJ's family (via someone who has that real life contact info).

The board, as of now, is the free version. We can have up to 10 contributions before we have to pay. The cost is minimal for the upgraded one and I'm willing to take that on if needed.

So basically, before I send out the URL, Gob and I wanted to gauge interest. Let us know either here or via PM. Thanks.

I’ve contacted Jim’s sister (who is making arrangements) to ask about any publicly accessible funeral or online legacy page arrangements; maybe we should wait on that information before adding another layer of technology with cost and accessibility issues? Folks can always write a tribute now if they feel compelled, and save it by sending it to Jim’s PM box - it will save into your outbox for ease of future access.

Yes, I agree. I'm waiting for more info to surface (none yet) before I get involved with other methods to acknowledge Jim's passing.

Anything I find I'll pass it on, but only by PM as per Gob's insistence.

I'm all for that. If we will be given access to a legacy page already created for him, that's a better route.
