Tens of thousands killed.* Millions displaced. Many times worse than Katrina.

* The official count is over 10,000 right now but it's going up very quickly and just a quick look at the areas inundated so that people on the 3rd floors of buildings were killed says it will go up a lot more.

Personal link, Hatch got an email from one of her Japanese friends, on the day of the disaster, to say she was safe, as she had left the Miyajgi prefecture, by "bullet" train, three hours before the first quake, and was therefore well out of danger when the Tsunami hit.Prime Minister Naoto Kan has said Japan is experiencing its greatest hardships since World War II as it tackles the aftermath of an earthquake, tsunami and a growing nuclear crisis.
He said the situation at the quake-hit Fukushima nuclear plant remained grave, a day after an explosion at a reactor.
Japanese broadcaster NHK says the total number of confirmed deaths caused by the disaster now stands at 1,596.
But police warn that the death toll in Miyagi region alone could top 10,000.
Millions of survivors remain without electricity and authorities are stepping up relief efforts as the scale of the tragedy becomes clearer.
About 310,000 people have been evacuated to emergency shelters, NHK says.

We've got three Japanese students staying with us for a week in June, be interesting to hear their experiences.

We recently installed a 'hot-desk' in our office for the casual computer labbies to use. The first to use it was from Christchurch. A week later the quake hit. The second lad is Japanese...

I think you are in the wrong thread? No need to reply here - don't want to divert it from the terrible situation in Japan. I cannot truly realise the power of an event which can cause death by drowing not just close by in Japan but also 5,000 miles away in Cali.Lord Jim wrote:Well Gen'l, I am not a good Christian by any means, but I have to say I am somewhat offended when you refer to "The Roman Church" (The One True Faith) as some sort of "cult"... I don't think I'd want to survive if Hen and Hatch didn't.
A 60-year-old man has been found on the roof of his floating house nearly 10 miles out at sea, two days after the tsunami that devastated the north-east coast of Japan.
Hiromitsu Shinkawa must have resigned himself to his fate when he was swept away by the retreating tsunami that roared ashore in his home town of Minami Soma in Fukushima prefecture.
As the wave approached, Shinkawa took the fateful decision to return home to collect belongings. Minutes later he was out at sea clinging to a piece of the roof from his own home.
Incredibly, he was spotted by a maritime self-defence force destroyer taking part in the rescue effort as he clung to the wreckage with one hand and waved a self-made red flag with the other. He had been at sea for two days.
Reports said that on being handed a drink aboard the rescue boat, Shinkawa gulped it down and immediately burst into tears. His wife, with whom he had returned home as the tsunami approached, is still missing.
He was quoted as saying: "No helicopters or boats that came nearby noticed me. I thought that day was going to be the last day of my life."

Another big bang there, poor sods...
Explosions at a Japanese quake-stricken nuclear plant have led to radiation levels that can affect human health, a senior Japanese official has said.
Prime Minister Naoto Kan has urged those living within 30km (18 miles) of the plant to stay indoors.
Earlier, reactor 2 at the Fukushima Daiichi plant was hit by a blast - the third reactor to explode in four days - leading to fears of a meltdown.
The crisis was sparked by a 9.0-magnitude quake and tsunami on Friday.
Thousands of people are believed to have died.
Exclusion zone
A fresh explosion rocked reactor 2 at the Fukushima Daiichi plant - 250km (155 miles) north-east of Tokyo - in the early hours of Tuesday.
"Now we are talking about levels that can impact human health," said Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano.

Ok you sad heathens. What exactly constitutes a sign?
The Bible says: there will be signs and people with itching ears.. Looking for people to Mis-lead them...
So. When you heathens read the news. I don't expect you to convert.
But, My question is? How do you deal with it?
If God didn't "cause it"? then who did?
The Insurance policy said that God did it.
And they won't pay , being it was an ACT of "God" and all...
So I ask, in all honesty; WTF? "
Is there a "God"?
And why do Insurance companies seem to acknowledge the existence of said deity to justify their not paying of claims whilst claiming in the same breath that said deity does not exist?//? \
OR does acknowledging and then claiming that said deity absolves them of all responsibility increase their profit margin...
WOW~
WTF
You lot sort it out.
The world is going to Hell in a hand basket if you hadn't noticed.
I for one have tried to tell you before without success. However, I will leave it to Rubato to give you the graph of the downward spiral of humankind.
I am totally sure that the breakdown will include a Red and Blue chart showing how the "repuglicans" are responsible for every evil known to humankind.
Fine. That is his opinion and he is entitled to it.
He excels at that shite...
However, I think that human nature proves that we are our own worst enemy. No need to be Red OR Blue! Or White for that matter...
What did Walt say via Pogo? "We have met the enemy, and they are us."

Japan is primarily Shinto/Buddhist which believes your actions dictate your karma. That is: what goes around, comes around.
Appealing to deities can release you from karma, if you are sincere. Perform rituals without sincerity (dogma) will not change the wheel of karma.
While the real aim is release yourself from caring about karma: what happens - happens.
