Protests vs. Social Distancing

Post by Long Run »

Going on 8 days now of substantial protests across the country, hundreds and thousands of people shoulder to shoulder. Pictures show most wearing masks and most appear to be in the low-risk age ranges. Will there be a spike in cases from this? And it seems like this will be a good empirical test of how effective cloth masks are at limiting transmission of the virus.

I’ve been worrying like crazy about the protesters, hoping they don’t get sick and concerned about who they might spread it to when they go home to their families and communities.

But,

While I don’t think commerce as usual is a sufficient justification to put public health at risk, I do think social justice is. However many people die of covid19 before the pandemic ends, it will be only a small fraction of the deaths resulting from racism and inequities in our society. Any public health official will tell you that.

Yes, the ends always justifies the means.

Your collective inability to acknowledge this obvious truth makes you all look like fools.

Probably, it's a very interesting experiment you're doing. Thanks.

Gob it’s petty pathetic that all you ever do is tear down the USA while falsely arguing that where you live is light years better. Except when you’re posting article after article denigrating the justice system in the UK and especially its failure to properly persecute black and brown people - that is, to your satisfaction.

Really fucking ugly and sad.

Are you smoking some good Cornish weed or what? You’re constantly going on about denigrating the USA’s political system, social ills, etc. It’s an endless mantra with you, plenty of such posts just in the last two weeks.

I hope this isn’t a sign of cognitive decline. Probably just lying, which isn’t much better.

Actually, I think this position concedes that the lock down should be ended.

Well I think lockdowns ARE ending - cautiously, in phases, with an eye toward safety.

I would happily join a protest outdoors with masked protesters, masked myself, and distanced as much as I needed to be comfortable. From what I understand about covid19 transmission, this is relatively low risk. I wouldn’t be unmasking or hugging or whatever. Being tear gassed isn’t something I’d have much choice about.

I wouldn’t go into an indoor restaurant setting and sit across the table from an unmasked dinner companion and be waited on by an unmasked waiter and be surrounded by tables of other unmasked people eating and talking - not even with the tables six feet apart. From the studies I’ve read on covid19 transmission, this is a very high risk activity.

I’ll go back to choir practice only if we figure out a way to do it with a lot of space between us - six feet just isn’t enough when your singing full throated, even with masks on. Too many droplets can get past the mask in that scenario.

But hey, I’m nearly 50 and have serious health issues that put me at very high risk to die from covid19. Younger folks have different tolerances and that should definitely be a factor in the great reopening.

Now, point out, as I requested, where where I have been guilty of; "falsely arguing that where you live is light years better. "

Go ahead, take your time, the floor is yours....

Based in the data my health department shared on Friday, there have been upward spikes in COVID cases in several states that have had early protests, or are reopened/opening. I will have to go to my notes for the specifics, but the real question is what do they do with that data.

ETA: He mentioned UT, CA, and TX. In particular, he noted that last week, CA had its worst three days in the last month. That is definitely not the kind of trend you want to see.
