Maybe NOW we can stop fighting the Civil War?
Re: Maybe NOW we can stop fighting the Civil War?
If Juneteenth becomes a State holiday in New York, will white people get the day off?

I found this one a bit scary - so many ways to interpret it.

Re: Maybe NOW we can stop fighting the Civil War?
It's an official holiday in Texas since 1980 (as "Emancipation Day") which is where it originated. Since Texas itself was largely a backwater in the Rebellion, Union troops and news didn't get there all that urgently. On June 19th 1865, a Union general finally showed up and announced the news that the Emancipation proclamation (and the by-now existence of Federal forces in Texas sufficient to make it stick) meant that all slaves in territory NOT occupied by Union troops (such as Texas) had been free since January 1, 1863. (More exact detail below).A common misconception is that this day marks the end of slavery in the United States. Although this day marks the emancipation of all slaves in the Confederacy, the institution of slavery was still legal and existed in the Union border states after June 19, 1865. Slavery in the United States did not officially end until the ratification of the 13th amendment to the Constitution of the United States on December 6, 1865, which abolished slavery entirely in all of the U.S. states and territories
In fact, I find "Juneteenth" to be a vaguely demeaning celebration. All it marks is that some few slaves learned something inadequate but significant had happened two years earlier and had a very local party each year. Black slaves emancipated themselves in their thousands, voting with their feet, their bodies and their very lives to fight the slave-ocracy that was the South. Celebrating the Emancipation proclamation is also bogus. But it's not up to me to decide what black people want to celebrate - it's theirs. It's not a white thing. So happy day today!
Who wasn't free:
https://www.archives.gov/exhibits/featu ... oclamationthe Emancipation Proclamation was limited in many ways. It applied only to states that had seceded from the United States, leaving slavery untouched in the loyal border states. It also expressly exempted parts of the Confederacy (the Southern secessionist states) that had already come under Northern control. Most important, the freedom it promised depended upon Union (United States) military victory.

LR--The war is over? As we learned in Vietnam, there is a big difference between superiority on the battlefield/even winning battles and winning hearts and minds. If you don't win the latter, the war will never be over; but it's the hardest part to win.

You got that right.
My mom always seemed to stock at least a few of the Boyz surprise recipes-in-a-can. I moved out of my parents house in '72. I have NEVER purchased a single can of this crap, and it will never darken my food cabinet.
Don't hold me to this, but I think I'd rather starve. Nasty.

The beef ravioli is a guilty pleasure of mine. Reminds me of being young and free of responsibility and consequences
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.

I can SO relate! My mother fed us Chefboyardee in my childhood and it was years into my adulthood before I learned to love real Italian food.RayThom wrote: ↑Fri Jun 19, 2020 4:34 pmYou got that right.

Now one of my go-to meals when I’m too lazy to cook anything elaborate and craving carbs is some al dente angel hair run through with Sophia pesto, garnished with toasted pine nuts, fresh medley tomatoes and a blend of shredded Asiago, fontina, Parmesan and provolone cheeses.
I even eat ravioli these days, but it’s gourmet fresh or frozen that I find various places - I’ve got some pear & Gorgonzola ravioli and some mushroom truffle ravioli in the freezer right now - one of Aldi’s brands, very good and very inexpensive. I know it’s best when totally fresh, but I don’t have the space or patience for making my own pasta.

I recall seeing the real Chef Boyardee on a TV show when I was pretty young; as I recall, he was a chef in and owned Italian restaurant in the US and sold his name and likeness to promote the canned pastas. I recall liking them as a kid, but after I ate a number of C Rations in the army (the spaghetti tasted exactly the same as the Chef Boyardee one) , I can't stand them anymore. My kids did love Spaghettios, but I think they were Franco American, not Chef Boyardee (but I doubt much difference--kind of like La Choy and Chun King canned Chinese food.

The question remains, was he a real chef or just an impasta?
Regardless, I see the Chef pasta way on June 21, 1985.
To keep this thread on track -- I wonder if Hector favored the Union Army or the CSA?

He's probably have sold rations to both sides, or at least the highest bidder.

If you check the Wikipedia entry for "Chey Boyardee" (the company, not the man himself) you will find this"Big RR wrote: ↑Fri Jun 19, 2020 5:12 pmI recall seeing the real Chef Boyardee on a TV show when I was pretty young; as I recall, he was a chef in and owned Italian restaurant in the US and sold his name and likeness to promote the canned pastas. So, yeah, the canned spaghetti you had in your C-rats were probably the same stuff you had been eating as a kid, merely packed in an O-D can and labeled "meal, combat, individual, spaghetti w/beef chunks in sauce".The U.S. military commissioned the company during World War II for the production of army rations, requiring the factory to run 24 hours a day. At its peak, the company employed approximately 5,000 workers and produced 250,000 cans per day.

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?
Re: Maybe NOW we can stop fighting the Civil War?
Okay, now that you've got all that Boyardee stuff settled, I knew he was a real chef because I looked him up before making my early comment that his image on his product is offensive to Italians. Or at least offensive to Italians that are of the same kind of victim mentality of all the other victim mentality people.
Are we supposed to believe that every Italian chef looks like that guy and they are so ashamed of their Italian name that they need to use "Americanized" names? In other words, we're supposed to accept that the Italian image on Chef Boyardee cans are a representation of all Italians and the only good Italian is an Americanized Italian who eats canned spaghetti?
I'm boycotting Chef Boyardee products, which means I shall continue to have never eaten the product. I apologize to all Italians and support the idea of Octoberteenth Day, which should replace Columbus Day and take place on October 19th. This will give everyone (especially the Woke people) the choice to feel sorry for Italians rather than slam them for what Columbus did - or both. That's what America is all about; Equal rights to be offended or not. God bless the United States of America.....

I see where the citizens of Milton PA want to tear down the Chef's statue because he may have been born on Columbus' birthday.
