Trump abruptly escorted from briefing after shooting near WH

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump was abruptly escorted by a U.S. Secret Service agent out of the White House briefing room as he was beginning a coronavirus briefing Monday afternoon. He returned minutes later, saying there was a “shooting” outside the White House that was “under control.”
“There was an actual shooting and somebody’s been taken to the hospital,” Trump said. The president said the shots were fired by law enforcement, saying he believed the individual who was shot was armed. “It was the suspect who was shot,” Trump said.
Trump said he was escorted to the Oval Office by the agent. The White House was placed on lockdown following the incident.
The shooting took place near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue just blocks from the White House, according to two sources with knowledge of the situation who were not authorized to speak publicly about it. Law enforcement officials were still trying to determine the suspect's motive.
The suspect was transferred to a local hospital, and the District of Columbia fire department said the man suffered serious or possibly critical injuries. Authorities were investigating whether the individual has a history of mental illness.
Trump praised the work of Secret Service personnel for their work in keeping him safe. Asked if he was shaken by the incident, Trump asked reporters: “I don’t know. Do I seem rattled?”

A shooting mere "blocks" from the White House? And he had to cower in fear under lockdown? What a wuss!

I'm glad the Secret Service still upholds their duty to the office, if not the man.
Just a reminder, though ... once Biden takes the oath in January, as a past-president Trump and the First Bimbo get secret service protection for life (and Barron until age 16, as did Caroline and John-John Kennedy or Amy Carter). Man, I'd hate to have to be on the team that will have charge of his protection once he leaves office, however.
And that bit about the minor children ... Chelsea Clinton was 20 when her dad stepped down in 2001 so she lost her Secret Service guards at that time. Suppose her mother Hillary HAD won the election in 2016. Would she have then become eligible for Secret Service protection again as the immediate family of a seated president, even though she was an adult?

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

All of Trump’s adult children have SS protection, just as the Bush daughters did - they were in their 20s during their dad’s presidency. Age of kids isn’t a determining factor.
Trump's family is close to breaking the SS budget with their expansive expectations for travel protection.

No argument with that, BSG, but that's because he is still the seated PINO (President In Name Only). Bush's daughters — and Obama's and even LBJ's, for that matter — also received Secret Service protection while Bush and Obama were still in office too. I'm not sure, but I think that, as members of Jimmy Carter's family, even Miss Lillian and brother Billy might have been under the watchful eye of the Secret Service too.BoSoxGal wrote: ↑Tue Aug 11, 2020 4:36 pmAll of Trump’s adult children have SS protection, just as the Bush daughters did - they were in their 20s during their dad’s presidency. I was talking about what happens *AFTER* Trump steps down .... or is forcibly evicted by armed members of the US Army or Marine Corps when he tries to overstay his welcome.

It will revert to being just him and Melania.
Although once he goes to Rikers then Attica, I assume he no longer qualifies for SS protection and it will be just Melania. Unless she divorces him, not sure if she gets protection post-divorce, I would doubt it. Jackie Kennedy didn’t get it as a widow.

Other presidential widows did have SS protection until death, but I think Jackie O requested none after marrying Onassis. The SS still protected Caroline and John Jr. until they turned 16.
There’s never been a divorcée so likely no precedent for that scenario. How very Trump.
