Some things I miss

Post by TPFKA@W »

Wyler's root beer mix. Yes it was overly sugared but back in the day we ran that sugar off. Kraft chicken and noodle box dinners- a single person's friend. Planter's cheese balls, the original ones, not the ones they are selling now. Government cheese, I wish they would send that stuff out to us again, there has been no cheese like it since. Chi-chis seafood nachos, loved Chi-chis, yes I do know it was in no way representative of Mexican food but I loved those seafood nachos and the seafood quesadillas. Nom. Howard Johnson's orange drink-delish!

What can you add to this list?

The 1950s Lyon's chocolate cupcakes. That chocolate topping was soft, thick and peelable. Always delicately removed - ate the sponge - then the deliciously creamy choccy top - more like an almost melting fudge and not hard. Pleasure deferred
Double features with a cartoon or newsreel (or both) in between.
Cadbury's Milk Tray chocolate bar - all those different centres in a regular size slab
The Goons
My waist

5 cent candy bars.

Your collective inability to acknowledge this obvious truth makes you all look like fools.

Brain's faggots.

Brain's faggots.
They were a student's friend back in the day. Four of them in an alumin(i)um tray, put them in the oven for 20 minutes or eat them cold if you were starving or in a rush. Try to be on your own a couple of hours later because they could be fartaceous. Do NOT inspect the ingredients list.

First I had to look that up; next I have to register my strong aversion to the idea of eating such a thing cold (and hopefully that means, once cooked then refrigerated?).

Necco wafers - they were always an option, even though I rarely got them. Now they’ll never be an option again. :(

My recollection, which is occasionally faulty, is that they were sold ready cooked. Checking on line it seems that they are not. It may be that they changed from selling them precooked to selling them frozen and raw. BTW I see that they changed the name from Brain's Faggots (my day and per Gob's post) to Mr. Brain's Faggots. I'm sure that was at least partially due to the marketing department wishing to lessen sophomoric jests of the "What's in a Brain's faggot?" "There's a clue in the name." type, by making it clear that there was a Mr. Brain at the heart of it.

And, of course, at the liver, lungs and tendons of it.

I don't think that the term faggot, as a derogatory term for homosexuals, was in common use in sixties/early seventies Britain - it was a later US import.

I miss those innocent days when nobody thought it likely or even possible that someone would purposely contaminate containers on a store shelf.

I miss when words were usable. And when Uranus was pronounced Yer anus rather than "yor an ass"

noun
a bundle of sticks or twigs, esp when bound together and used as fuel
a bundle of iron bars, esp a box formed by four pieces of wrought iron and filled with scrap to be forged into wrought iron
a ball of chopped meat, usually pork liver, bound with herbs and bread and eaten fried
a bundle of anything

verb (tr)
to collect into a bundle or bundles
needlework to do faggoting on (a garment, piece of cloth, etc)

Related to????
Fasces (English: /ˈfæsiːz/ FASS-eez, Latin: [ˈfaskeːs]; a plurale tantum, from the Latin word fascis, meaning "bundle"; Italian: fascio littorio) is a bound bundle of wooden rods

I thought Brain faggots were cigarettes initially.

As much as I dislike you, I could almost kiss you for sharing this lovely news!

After two years out of production - the original confectioners having gone out of business - the NECCO wafer recipe and branding have been purchased by another candy company and the wafers are back in production! Fresh tasty NECCO wafers!

I’ll have a roll before the month is over.

Well as much as I loathe you, were you to find me some Wylers root beer mix or a Chi-Chi's that was still open, I would almost kiss you back.

I hadn't made that connection. The word 'fascist' has the same root and the symbol of fascism is a bundle of sticks, with the implication that while one rod can be easily broken, a bundle cannot. Hence strength through unity. I had not known that my student years predilection for faggots was a symbol of my fascist tendencies.

I know you don't especially care for me either, but you'll really hate me when I tell you that, as a kid, I used NECCO wafers as BB-gun targets.  So much more satisfying because they would shatter and you'd know you hit them instead of merely poking holes in a target and not knowing how accurate you were until you walked up and checked.

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

There are A&W root beer mixes on the market. It's probably not the same as Wylers. Wylers probably had cocaine in it.
