I miss the smell of fresh ground coffee in the A&P grocery store. That was the only store back then that sold beans that you could grind in the store. Now it is everywhere B U T ! A&P also had an awesome spanish bar cake for $1.49. it was wonderful. Not to be found now anywhere.

One of my first real jobs was at an A&P in Wisconsin from 1973 to 1979 (when they withdrew from the entire upper midwest). I well remember those coffee grinders at the checkout counters (and the bags of Eight O'Clock, Red Circle, and Bokar coffee), as well as those rich, dark Spanish bar cakes — sold under the Jane Parker private label/brand name, if I remember correctly.Burning Petard wrote: ↑Fri Aug 14, 2020 12:26 amI miss the smell of fresh ground coffee in the A&P grocery store. Maybe I'll talk to one of our local 'craft' bakeries; I'm sure there must be a recipe for those bar cakes lurking in the internet archives somewhere.

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?
Re: Some things I miss
I've strained my brain and have come to the conclusion that I don't miss any type of food or snacks from the past. Also, after some research I know for sure that I would never have eaten a faggot.
"Traditionally, faggots are made from offal, usually pork, and from the bits of the animal that are generally discarded but now tend to just be the liver and possibly, the heart."

The same root is used for "fascine".ex-khobar Andy wrote: ↑Thu Aug 13, 2020 5:26 pmI hadn't made that connection. The word 'fascist' has the same root and the symbol of fascism is a bundle of sticks, with the implication that while one rod can be easily broken, a bundle cannot. Hence strength through unity. I had not known that my student years predilection for faggots was a symbol of my fascist tendencies.MajGenl.Meade wrote: ↑Thu Aug 13, 2020 3:50 pm
noun
a bundle of sticks or twigs, esp when bound together and used as fuel
Fasces (English: /ˈfæsiːz/ FASS-eez, Latin: [ˈfaskeːs]; a plurale tantum, from the Latin word fascis, meaning "bundle"; Italian: fascio littorio) is a bound bundle of wooden rods

Re: Some things I miss
Something everyone misses. What are those things below Abe's hands?

And on the approach to the Monument?

In ancient times, fasces were a Roman symbol of power and authority, a bundle of wooden rods and an axe bound together by leather thongs. Fasces represented that a man held imperium, or executive authority. Exercising imperium, a Roman leader could expect his orders to be obeyed, could dole out punishment, and could even execute those who disobeyed. The fasces he carried symbolized this power in two ways: the rods suggest punishment by beating, the axe suggests beheading. On its surface, the fasces imply power, strength, authority, and justice.
And inside:

Inside the chamber, the fasces appear again and again, binding the memorial's features and artists together into one unified message. But inside the chamber, the fasces no longer show the axe. Without the axe, the fasces are a bundle of rods bound together. This image symbolizes the very idea of our nation: that many states bound together form one nation, and out of many people come one nation. Each wooden rod is breakable individually, but bound together they are strong. Each state is weaker individually, but bound together by the Constitution, they are stronger. As a symbol of the Union, the fasces have particular importance to Abraham Lincoln and his fight to preserve the Union.

Ah, but I don't eat meat, so I'm entitled to miss them.

So are these a special version, or is ‘faggots’ the UK term for meatballs?

Nort sure, but if you look at Mr. Brain's smile, you know what he is getting under the apron and out of the picture. And it is interesting why two balls are pictured; you don't have to be Fellini to figure out why..

Anyway it’s a long time to be apart, I feel for you both.
Doesn’t mean I’ll stop arguing with you.
