Trump Visits CALIFORNIA

Trump on climate change: 'It will get cooler," he says without evidence during Calif. visit

Smoke from the West Coast's massive wildfires was visible as President Donald Trump exited Air Force One at McClellan Park, a former U.S. Air Force Base about 10 miles outside Sacramento, Calif., Monday.

Trump visited the Golden State for a briefing on the multiple wildfires burning across the West Coast since mid-August, and from the tarmac he called a question regarding his slow response to the fires "nasty."

"I got a call from the governor immediately and I called him immediately," Trump said. "On that call I declared an emergency. I gave an emergency declaration so don't tell me about not doing it. That included FEMA coming here immediately...That's a nasty question."

While Trump signed an emergency declaration to open up federal funding for California to fight the fires in late-August, he didn't tweet about the fires until Friday night, according to the Washington Post.

Speaking with reporters, the president said he has a "good relationship" with California Gov. Gavin Newsom even though they're "obviously from different sides of the political spectrum."

Minutes after landing, Trump met with Newsom and other state officials.

The governor got straight to the point.

"It is self-evident that climate change is real," Newsom told the president. "I feel very strongly the hots are getting hotter, the dries are getting drier."

As he has repeatedly done in the past, Trump downplayed climate change and called on the need for better forest management to deter wildfires.

California Natural Resources Secretary Wade Crowfoot urged the president to “recognize the changing climate and what it means to our forests.”

“If we ignore that science and sort of put our head in the sand and think it’s all about vegetation management, we’re not going to succeed together protecting Californians," Crowfoot added.

“It will start getting cooler,” Trump said. "Just you watch."

“I wish science agreed with you,” Crowfoot said.

“I don’t think science knows,” Trump says.

The fires have killed at least 33 people, burned millions of acres and forced thousands from their homes on the West Coast.

The Associated Press contributed to this story.

I watched several excerpts from that meeting on Joy Reid’s show tonight - it made my blood boil.

If he is re-elected, we are doomed in terms of climate change abatement. There will be nothing, except a new lease of life for oil & gas.

I just don’t understand how he can care so little for his grandchildren’s futures.

I think we should focus on his blatant rejection of climate science and not on his awkward means of expressing a very true concept - dried out deadfall does, in fact, effectively explode into fire when it meets with lightning sparks or other means of ignition.

eta: This link from the government explains how under certain conditions spontaneous combustion occurs in leaf piles and other organic matter. Deadfall and leaf litter in a really dry terrain is a fire hazard even in the absence of external ignition sources. https://www.nps.gov/articles/fire-preve ... ustion.htm

With respect, the link says nothing of the kind. Trees are not mentioned, deadfall or otherwise. "Piles" of leaves are. This contemplates human raking of leaves into densely packed heaps permitting internal heat to rise sufficiently to cause fire.

I see nothing there to validate his theory of suddenly exploding fallen trees. Not saying it's wrong; jus' sayin'

But I do agree that his braindead expressions are not the point - his rejection of science and climate change should be the focus. Unfortunately, his braindead sheeple don't like science but they do like fairy stories.

Well, probably not fairies but you know . . .

I think they are ok with fairies. I hear them say it all the time when the subject comes up. “I have no problem with gay people I just don’t want to hear about them”.

Honestly insert “description of people other than themselves” (brown, asian, women, liberals) in that same sentence and you have the conversation down pat.

I'm happy to focus on both, particularly when the Republican narrative is that Joe Biden is supposedly too demented to express himself clearly, while the Cheeto-in-Chief demonstrates time after time that he is incapable of stringing four coherent words together.

I added the link and clearly stated it was to prove that even spontaneous fires can occur in woodland under the right conditions. That’s why it is in a separate paragraph.

I didn’t assert that the link supported my statement about extremely dry deadfall exploding into flames when met with ignition source like lightning or advancing wildfire - that assertion is based on years living in the West, seeing wildlife up close in my own community, hearing about and living with wild land wildfire as a major factor of life for more than a decade and having learned from a great many folks who are experts on the subject.

But then, any idiot who has ever thrown a properly cured/dried log on a fire knows that wood does, in fact, explode into flames.

Yep, throw a log on to a fire and it bursts into flames. You should alert the media

Thanks for the other clarification. I thought it applied the link to the entire post. :ok

Either you are incredibly stupid or you just have zero experience of wildfires and zero ability to even imagine in your mind’s eye that when lightning strikes dried deadfall IT DOES IN FACT EXPLODE INTO FLAMES.

Without an ignition source, lightening, stupid camper, gender reveal party, or whatever, fallen trees do not EXPLODE into flames.

Obviously Drumpf never saw a tree west of Central Park before he was elected.

Yes, he DID say trees explode into flames. This is one of several links to what was said. https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-f ... res-2020-9

Here's the actual recording via Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsrO9-D5c5U

Yes there is such a thing as spontaneous combustion. That happens when DAMP, not dry, material reaches its combustion temperature. A good example is alfalfa that is baled too green and stacked in a barn. Any farmer knows that. Another example is oily-greasy rags left in a pile. I've seen both happen. The fire department put the former out. I put out the latter. I used to extinguish my company cat every evening too. She liked to be an indoor/outdoor cat.

I see no mention of spontaneous combustion of trees in this article either: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spontaneo ... oor%20heat.

  You guys are just being assholes. It is very clear to anyone with half a fucking brain that what he is trying to express is that the deadfall and standing dead trees are like tinder which explode into flames when lightning and other ignitions sources meet them. This is in fact a very true issue with fire suppression in the western forests and it IS a factor in woodland wildfires.

I’m sorry I made the mistake of even bringing up the spontaneous combustion factor - which does happen - because now you’re twisting it to try to undermine my point which is that what Trump said actually does happen, he just expressed it stupidly as he often does with true concepts. Yes the guy is a moron who can’t talk himself out of a paper bag, but some of the points he makes are actually true and all this running around criticizing his misspeaking draws attention away from his LIES and also gives more fuel to the fire of his followers hating and disbelieving his critics because they are all able to grasp with their common fucking sense that YES HE OFTEN FINDS ACORNS and even when he does some of you can’t fucking acknowledge it, you just have to beat that fucking horse until it’s pulverized. 🙄🙄

The basic recipe for a monster 21st century wildfire is this: Take hot air and no rain and moisture evaporating from trees, shrubs, and soil. After a series of these long, expansive, hot, dry spells, trees and shrubs will be transformed into ideal tinder to feed a fire. The bigger the area affected, the more available fuel. All you need then is a spark, which could come from a power line failure, a cigarette, or a firecracker.

Climate models show that as temperatures continue to rise, the atmosphere and land in some regions, like California’s forests, will grow more arid. There will be more frequent and intense droughts, followed by intense periods of rain — a form of weather whiplash. This prompts the growth of thick underbrush, which then dries out in the subsequent droughts and becomes highly flammable kindling.
