What is the date on this performance? I must be pre-covid. It all reminds me of when I arrived on the East coast and discovered that I must quickly learn the basics of a game I assumed was played on a field, by girls. In my ignorance as an immigrant from the mid-West, my social standing was down the toilet. In the 70's, the Philly Flyers were one of the regular contenders for the Stanley Cup. When it was a home game they really needed to win, they shelved the National Anthem and played a recording by the late Kate Smith of 'God Bless America'

It seemed like they never lost when they began with Kate Smith. I went to two home games back then (and one when they were visiting in Washington and total cost of seeing the game live was much cheaper than in Philly) I can honestly say I rarely could see the puck; the game, to my perception, was/is incredibly fast.

That's why they call the version played by the girls "field hockey", to differentiate from the gentlemen's game.

And don't get me started on all the variants of 'football' ... and I''m NOT talking about the game played with the black-and-white ball and the nets, but the Australianized version of rugby a/k/a 'footie', which in turn has led to American NFL and college football (same basic game but some rule differences between the two), Canadian-league football, and Arena football.

While I agree that American football (why do people say that when they just mean "football"? ) arose from rugby and soccer, and also that Australian football was played in Australia before the first American football game, I seriously doubt that a lot of Australian football (if any) was played outside of Australia (it was a pretty isolated place).

As for the OP, God Bless America is a song I never cared for, especially Kate Smith's blustery screaming of it (not as bad as this version, but not that much better IMHO); I'm not sure why it's so popular, but I guess it is.
