Some People Aren't Happy Unless They Have Something to be Offended by.......

This is the world we live in... :loon
'Jeopardy' Contestant Calls Alleged White Power Hand Sign 'Terrible Misunderstanding'

A “Jeopardy” contest who used a hand sign allegedly associated with a white power group says the gesture was a “terrible misunderstanding,” as alumni of the game show call on producers to address the controversy.

Over 560 (and growing) former “Jeopardy” players published a letter on Medium addressing contestant Kelly Donohue’s three-fingered hand sign, which they allege is associated with the white power group known as the Three Percenters.

“A recent contestant has caused concern among ‘Jeopardy’ viewers for two separate occurrences, and we as former contestants feel the need to speak out against the messaging that these choices communicated — either intentionally or unintentionally — by the contestant Kelly Donohue and, implicitly by association, the producers of ‘Jeopardy,'” the letter reads. [I'll take "Unhinged White Guilt" for $200, Alex!]

Donohue, who recently won three episodes in a row, made his fourth consecutive appearance on the game show Tuesday night. As longtime announcer Johnny Gilbert introduced the contestant, he made a three-fingered hand gesture where he “held his thumb and forefinger together with his other three fingers extended and palm facing inward, and he tapped his chest.” The “Jeopardy” contestants’ letter referred to this symbol as a “racist dog whistle.”

Donohue addressed the controversy in a now-deleted Facebook post, where he said there was no “hidden agenda or any malice behind” his gesture beyond the indication that he was a three-time winner.

“Many of the great champions of old had a little signature hello they would do on-screen when being introduced by Johnny Gilbert,” Donohue wrote. “I decided to count my victories. That’s a 1. That’s a 2. That’s a 3. No more. No less. Had I managed to repeat as champion, you’d have been treated to a 4.” [Racist!]

Donohue (who was defeated Tuesday night) posted on Facebook once again Thursday morning. Stating that he is “truly horrified” with the recent social media posts regarding the controversy, Donohue said he deeply regrets “this terrible misunderstanding.”

“I absolutely, unequivocally condemn white supremacy and racism of any kind,” Donohue wrote. “It’s shameful to me to think anyone would try to use the stage of ‘Jeopardy’ to advance or promote such a disgusting agenda. During the taping of my fourth episode, I was simply raising three fingers to mark my 3rd win. There was nothing more I was trying to indicate.”

The day before Donohue made the hand gesture on television, he used a slur against the Roma people on Monday night’s show and was corrected by guest host Anderson Cooper. [He said the word "Gypsy"] The former contestants wrote in the letter that they hope the producers hire a sensitivity and diversity auditor to advise the show’s writing. Additionally, they hope to see changes made so “future mistakes of this magnitude never make it on air.” [Please tell me this is a joke... or wake me up or something]

“As people whose lives have been largely beneficially impacted by this show and its community, we really hope to see a statement and a disavowal of both of this week’s events, and we would like to see ‘Jeopardy’ address Kelly’s behavior,” the letter reads. “We know that contestants sign morals and ethics-related agreements when they prepare to appear on the show, and we would ask the production team to evaluate this situation within that framework.”

I find the excuse pretty feeble. In this culture counting on the fingers involves one-the forefinger, two, the middle finger, three, the ring finger. Tucking in the thumb and forefinger is not the norm for three.

Of course, it could come out eventually that the guy is the president of his local KKK branch but I really think you have to be doing some serious searching for hidden racist signalling to make something racist out of the gesture the man gave. And then what good does pointing it out to everyone? Especially if you have no further evidence of what kind of person the man is or what he meant by it? All these people have really done is potentially offend thousands of more people than ever would have perceived or known that he did something he didn't intend to do.

I guess you could say that I'm offended by people who seem to be in need of something to be offended by but I'm not happy about that.

Not necessarily.  Ever watch them count down the start of the time-trial stages at the Grand Tours like the Tour de France?

The starter will count down from five by showing all four fingers and the thumb – (five);
Fold down the thumb and show only the remaining four fingers – (four);
Raise the thumb back up while folding in the pinky and ring finger, displaying the thumb and the first two fingers – (three);
Fold in the middle finger and show only the index finger and the thumb – (two);
Fold in the index finger to show only the upright thumb – (one);
Then turn the whole hand sideways with the thumb pointing forward to indicate 'zero' and 'GO!'

As Freud is alleged to have said, "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar."  So I'm inclined to agree, he was only showing 'three' on his fingers.  And to anyone who wants to make a 'racist' symbol out of it, 'honi soit qui mal y pense.'

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

Regardless of his intention (which I tend to believe was innocent), it is beyond dispute that the gesture is also used as racist sign language.

It's a hobby for some, I'm sure they get a thrill out of being offended...

Get with the program Meade! If WE do it, it's fine and dandy and has no hidden meaning. If THEY do it it's because they are all hate filled Nazi racists! with

Because it's not actually the same gesture.
[the] thumb and forefinger together with [the] other three fingers extended and palm facing inward
which clearly distinguishes it from anyone making the "ok" gesture.

I seem to recall that there is a difference between the "V for Victory" or the "Peace" sign as well, depending on whether one is showing the front or back of the hand, but no one seems to be losing their shit about THAT.

Not yet, anyway.....

Except that neither "victory" nor "peace" are concepts that anyone should see as a danger.

Unlike "white power".

point One, this jeopardy contestant is not French. They always do things in a different way. Just work on an old French car, or even bicycle.

point Two: Just what three things are Raygun, Obama, Sir Paul, counting off?

Once again, not the same gesture (palm out vs. palm in).

Gypsy is a slur? Only sometimes. Are three fingers racist? Only sometimes.

Gypsy
1 sometimes offensive : a member of a traditionally itinerant people who originated in northern India and now live chiefly in south and southwest Asia, Europe, and North America

Looking at it more carefully, I would call that holding the palm perpendicular to the front, so once again not the same gesture.
