Just Curious. Maybe I'll just make this into a Poll....

Post by Joe Guy »

Last week I had my internet service upgraded from 18 MBps to 300 Mbps at no charge. It was AT&T ADSL and it's now AT&T Fiber Optic. Since the change, when I've done a speed test it has been showing somewhere around 350 Mbps download and 360 Mbps upload. I'm surprised at the upload speed because the highest I got before the switch was about 4 Mbps.

Isn't this an exciting subject? It's about time somebody came up with a real page turner.

I dunno, it works for me.

Where is "Don't know"?

How about, "Don't know; don't care — it's fast enough that I can work from home and that's good enough for me."

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

Dear god that's fast Joe! I'm on FTTP here, and these are my speeds..
70.6 Mbps download

20.2 Mbps upload

Latency: 22 ms
Server: Dublin
Your Internet connection is very fast.

Your Internet connection should be able to handle multiple devices streaming HD videos, video conferencing and gaming at the same time.

Is this a modern version of a dick measuring contest?

My computer is more often like Wily E. Coyote when his ACME shoes run out of juice than the Roadrunner, but Xfiinity assures me I am at 203 mps. Of course, there is the speed to the house, then the Wi-Fi speed (slower with gaps) andthe computer processing speed, and then there is the connection to my office personal computer which then connects to the office server. I am pretty sure that whatever is being measured, I get the worst of all worlds.

I do not know what any of these numbers mean in terms of practical function, but it seems to work just fine for my needs. (These are speeds at home. I assume that when I connect at the office it's faster; I'll check later.)

Your Internet speed is 49 Mbps

Latency
Unloaded 14 ms
Loaded 218 ms

Upload Speed 29 Mbps
GAH!

It's the latency that worries me. How do they know these things?

I am curious because for the past couple months I was getting free upgrade offers from AT&T every week in the mail to "Blazing Speeds" and figured that my service must be slow compared to whatever else is out there. I think the reason they're doing this is because AT&T is probably phasing out ADSL service here. And that's probably because ADSL is not as manly as fiber optic.
