I missed this gem of a film when it originally released - recommend it very highly as one of the better films I’ve seen set in The Troubles. Has a 96% fresh rating on RT.

Memorable quote:

“. . . posh cunts... telling thick cunts... to kill poor cunts... that's the army for you . . . It's all a lie... they don't care about you... you're just a piece of meat to them... piece of meat.”
For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.

Cunt is used much more casually and widely in the UK than in the USA, as I’m sure you’re well aware. For that matter potty mouth is widespread in both recognized military and groups like the IRA - not to mention among a great many grownups from all walks of life.

That quote is very powerful, as is the film, and it’s stupid that you let your prude panties twist around your ball sack such that you overlook that truth in favor of making a stupid comment showing off your self righteousness.

But thanks for reminding me to not waste future precious moments of my rapidly waning time on this earth in reading any more of your posts.

I note the MajGenl did not dispute the sentiment expressed, just the vocabulary. Would he accept the more typically American asshole instead of 'cunt'?
Does the MajGenl know the meaning both literal and figurative of the acronym FUBAR?

Actually I share the sentiment. For many years I was in DC for training every September. I went to visit the wall after the meeting ended. I stopped when I had to face the truth that the suits in the capital behind me as I looked were doing all over again, but with volunteers.

Well, when it comes to the list of people around whom I need to watch my Klatchian, I guess I can scratch BoSoxGal's name off of it.

Does seem stranger than hell, though, that she doesn't mind 'dirty words' or vulgar references to certain anatomical features, functions, or structures when you see just how big a hissie-fit she'll have over the use, even in a clinical or academic setting, of certain racial or ethnic terms.

Looks good. I first visited NI in 1976, as a callow 17 year old, I don't think much had changed since 71.

(a) No. I find gratuitous repetition of inane vulgarity to be offensive.

(b) Yes, the MajGenl does.

Sounds too much like "Have you stopped beating your wife?" :D

FWIW Kinkade's "painter of light" art is nauseating IMO.
OTOH I appreciate BSG's quote from the '71 movie because it will save me from bothering to start watching it.

And again, the word is much more blasé in UK usage than it is here - the power of that quote was in its profundity and I’m sorry that some folks would judge an excellent film by some profanities uttered in it. No film about combat troops in the military engaged in action would be realistic if it portrayed them all speaking in a sanitized manner fitting for great granny’s ears.
There's nothing profound about foul language - it is merely foul language and that's that. I am not judging the film (though I have as much right to do so as anyone else) by "some profanities". I am judging that I do not want to hear them or see them in sub-titles REPEATEDLY. The occasional use can usually be gotten past. My limit's about three, spread once every half hour (and yet I still think Fargo is a great movie)

I don't give a monkey's shit if troops swear like that all the time. They also shit on the ground but I'm sure we're not going to get repeated close-up shots of people shitting and wiping their arses. They probably pick their noses and eat it to too. Again . . . .

So the hell with "realistic" because you don't want that either. Omitting the swear words does not make things less "profound". "Glory" for example - "Shaving Ryan's Privates" - "Schindler's List" were brilliant without endless profanity. Can you think of more examples, children?

“. . . posh bastards... telling thick bastards... to kill poor bastards... that's the army for you . . . It's all a lie... they don't care about you... you're just a piece of meat to them... piece of meat.”

Yeah, as I thought. Says the same thing without getting a little kiddy ego trip from using the C word and titillating all those who think it's clever.

Will you just SHUT THE FUCK UP? If you are too stupid to grasp that the profundity isn’t in the word choice at all then you are on the road to dementia or just some kind of really fucking obsessed with this issue and you need to SHUT THE FUCK UP because I will NEVER STOP SWEARING here or anywhere else I please and your stupid fucking PENIS gives you ZERO FUCKING RIGHT to demand it.

Enough Meade. Put me on ignore and LEAVE ME THE FUCK ALONE YOU OBSESSIVE MOTHERFUCKER.

And the film isn’t full of endless profanities YOU THICK FUCKING CUNT, that quote was chosen to be shared not because it uses a common profanity but because of the concept it expresses. My God you are fucking thick and a total cock sucking arrogant controlling asshole to boot. Today I will spend some time feeling sympathy for your poor wife.

What you don’t like my angry self righteous rant about your posting behavior in this thread?

Okay, here is the bottom line rationally and without profanity of any kind:

If you don’t like profanity and want to debate whether it should be allowed any place in society or on this board, start a thread topic to discuss and debate with other posters.

But don’t follow me around this board and constantly lecture me on my use of profanity or my consumption of art, film, literature or politics which incorporate profanity. That isn’t discussing a topic up for debate, it’s being an obsessive controlling stalker and I think we can both agree that is not okay. You don’t like me or how I behave in this world - message well and fully received and I COULD NOT CARE LESS. You have no right to attempt to erase or control me. Just stop. PLEASE.

BSG, it is not true to say that I don't like you (I don't know you) or how you behave. This isn't life you know?

I opened a different thread and find that you decided to post there about this '71 debate with snarks about me. So I brought your post here to the right place and responded.

You persist in simple-minded and deliberate misunderstanding. You stated "that quote was chosen to be shared not because it uses a common profanity but because of the concept it expresses"

Why do you think that I don't understand that and abuse me? I do understand it. I don't for one minute think you chose that quote because it has naughty words in it. My point is surely clear - the profundity is not changed if those words are NOT used. The writer of the script doesn't lose any credit (or realism) if he/she/they had used the less offensive "bastard" instead. But that's up to them

I again thank you for the quote because now I know I will not waste my time watching the movie with my wife who entirely on her own and of her own volition also doesn't want to hear it.

You do whatever you like. I still think movie makers get little jollies off being potty mouths. Shock for shock's sake.

Meade and BP, how is it nauseating? I can understand not liking it, but feeling nauseous.

When my kids were small we had some of his fairly tale lithographs in their rooms; I wouldn't necessaily want to have them in my room, but never felt sick to my stomach.
