A Spider Just Moved In....

Post by Joe Guy »

This is an iPhoto picture. This is outside above my garage door. I had to lessen the quality in order to be able to post it here but I hope to get a better one with a clear image of the spider. I've named him Bruno. Anyway, I'm impressed by his web work so I told him I'd post it on the world wide web. For perspective, Bruno is about the size of a quarter with a large abdomen.

Some type of orb weaver? Spotted western?

I think it's an orb weaver. I will be taking a better photo of it.

I guess he's no saint.

Just saying that while male spiders do have the capability of extruding silk and constructing webs, they're usually created for mating purposes only and aren't usually anywhere near as large or elaborate as the webs female spiders spin.

Maybe you should call your resident arachnid "Brunhilde"?

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

Is fall the spider season? I mean, we have various spiders all year round here, but it always seemed like we'd get an inordinate number of very large spiders with very large webs from mid October to mid November. Except this year there have been noticeably fewer.
GAH!
