Marks & Spencer has started giving its staff pronoun badges as part of a diversity and inclusivity initiative.
The new tags can now include the person's name, and their chosen pronouns, options of which include: 'He/Him/His', 'She/Her/Hers', and 'They/Them/Their'.
The brand's Food PR manager David Parke shared a photo of his badge in a LinkedIn post where he said they have already 'helped start some very necessary conversations around gender identity and non-binary experiences'.
Sasha Misra, associate director of communications and campaigns at Stonewall, told The Sun: 'Having pronouns on badges is a simple yet impactful way to make sure LGBTQ+ identities are respected — for employees and customers alike.'
M&S said the move is a result of staff asking for the option to include gender pronouns on their name tags.
Mr Parke's post was shared two weeks ago, on International Pronouns Day.
In it he said: 'I'm so grateful that Marks and Spencer actively encourages us to share our pronouns at work, whether on our name badges or in our email signatures.
'We introduced these new badges a few months ago (a brilliant idea from a colleague that was then implemented by Cleo and our LGBTQ+ Network).'

He most certainly is: he tells us so. However we have no idea (nor should we have unless he chooses to share that with us) what sex he was assigned at birth.

Re: David is a bloke.
One isn't assigned skin color, hair color, eye color, shape of knees, or any other feature or element of the human body. At least, not by other humans. One is not "assigned" a gender either. One merely is.
That one may feel, relate to or wish to be another gender at some later period is a matter of self-assignation

Re: David is a bloke.
There are many settings in which I work where everyone is encouraged to share their pronouns, either on nametags or orally. It is a way of normalizing the practice so that those whose pronouns might not be what others expect do not feel singled out in revealing them.

I vote for everyone going by “it”. As in: “It puts the lotion on its skin or it gets the hose.” #timesaver#
Re: David is a bloke.
Badges should also include age, height, weight, religious affiliation, political party, race, single, married, divorced and all vaccinations and current diseases to ensure that all aspects of a person's identity are respected.

I recognise people by touching their faces. I’m not blind, I just like to freak people out.

One organization I work with, many of whose board and staff members have chosen to disclose their pronouns. it communicates that their clients should feel comfortable sharing their pronouns, knowing that their use will be respected.

" board and staff members have chosen to disclose their pronouns."
What, they had to keep them hidden before? It was a secret?

Re: David is a bloke.
It was not a question of previously being "hidden", but rather of everyone choosing to make them explicitly known, again, in order to normalize the practice. Those coming to the organization whose pronouns might not be obvious will not have to feel uncomfortable disclosing their pronouns if they know that everyone is doing it.

How I think I'll always introduce myself to people from now on; "Hi, I'm Gob. I'm a man, with a willy, and I prefer sticking it in women to men."

Re: David is a bloke.
Sure, because that will clearly serve the same purpose of putting at ease those who will be interacting with you. When you're next down at the pub, please introduce yourself that way to a woman within the hearing of her drunken husband. Then show us the pictures of what he did to your face.

Of course putting it on a card rather than saying it out loud makes all the difference
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.

Going on the basis of your avatar, Scooter, it can't be any worse than what someone did to yours

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?
