Any Beatle Fans Here?

Post by Joe Guy »

If you are a fan, you're most likely aware of the 'Get Back' three part video which will be shown on Disney+ on 11/25, 11/26 & 11/27. Today is the last day you can get your first month of the DisneyPlus channel for the price of $1.99. The regular price is $7.99/month. I signed up today but unless I find something else interesting to keep me watching that channel, I plan to cancel after viewing the Beatles.

I know it probably seems as though I'm acting like an old niggardly person. I think you're probably right because I've always saved money whenever possible and that's very likely why I have so much cash hermetically sealed in a mayonnaise jar and very well hidden on Funk and Wagnalls', front porch.

Anyway, you still have time to sign up like I did - but you better act fast.

Watch Hamilton if you haven’t already. Also there are many terrific nature documentaries on Disney, I highly recommend checking some out during your month if you’re into that kind of thing.

Thanks for the heads up about the Beatles docuseries, I will buy a month right now.

Been a Beatles fan since 1963.

I absolutely won't be forking any money over to Disney.

Your collective inability to acknowledge this obvious truth makes you all look like fools.

Not a Beatles fan, less of a Disney fan.

It looks interesting, but I'll wait a bit until I can get it through another venue (or perhaps buy the DVD set). I've always liked the Let It Be film, and would be interested on the different takes this documentary might present (though, FWIW, I never really cared for the Get Back song). I'm sure disney plus offers other things I might be interested in, but there are a lot of other channels I would subscribe to before I would pay for disney plus.

OP plus four responses, and of the five entries four of them are a variation of the theme "I won't support Disney".   When did the House of Mouse become the Spawn of Satan?

I know they are a greedy bunch of corporate assholes, but so is just about every other major company today.

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

Au contraire, I just said there are many other channels I would subscribe to before Disney Plus. Disney has gotten a lot of money from me for theme park visits when my kids were young, and I'll probably go again when I have grandkids. Nothing about the spawn of satan, just a choice for where I choose to spend my money.

And FWIW, I am one of those (apparently few) people who prefer to buy DVDs than to pay to have a copy placed in cloud storage for me (that I have to pay for as well). Indeed, if I had my way, I'd still have NetfiIix send me several DVDs at a time and return them when done--the choices are broader. I'm sure I'll eventually give up and just pay the monthly storage charged some day, but i am happy to have to hard copy DVDs in hand for now.

Off the top of my head: they're not paying the author of the Star Wars novelizations because they figure he'll die before he can win a suit.

Thanks for the info. I'll check it out. I like nature documentaries. I haven't taken the time yet to see what else is available on Disney+. I've always figured it would be mostly kid's stuff. Maybe I'll go over there now and check it out.

Apparently, reportedly, Disney has finally settled with Alan Dean Foster...but in the meantime “about a dozen” more authors have come forward with the exact same problem.
DisneyMustPay: authors form task force to fight for missing payments

A task force made up of science fiction and fantasy, romance, crime and horror authors has been formed in an attempt to persuade Disney into paying authors outstanding royalties for novelisations and comics relating to their properties, including Star Wars, Alien and Indiana Jones.

The so-called DisneyMustPay Joint Task Force includes major writers Neil Gaiman, Tess Gerritsen, Mary Robinette Kowal and Chuck Wendig among its members. It has been formed by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America in partnership with the Author’s Guild, Horror Writers Association, National Writers Union, Novelists, Inc., Romance Writers of America, and Sisters in Crime.

The author organisations came together after the SFWA became involved in the author Alan Dean Foster’s battle to get Disney to pay him royalties for his bestselling novelisations of Star Wars and Alien. Foster was asked to write his novelisation of Star Wars: A New Hope by George Lucas himself, which was published in 1976. When Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, it bought the rights to the Star Wars novel, while Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019 meant it also bought rights to Foster’s novelisations of Alien, Aliens and Alien 3.

But despite the books still being in print, Foster claimed that Disney was not paying him royalties for them and that he’d had to go public after the company ignored multiple queries from his agents, legal representatives and the SFWA. The latter claimed that Disney had argued that it had purchased the rights, but not the obligations of the contract.
(Story continues...)

Disney owns National Geographic (yeah it sucks, but almost everything is corporate these days) so on the channel one of the hubs is the NatGeo channel where you will find a treasure trove of nature documentaries and series and science stuff like Cosmos. Many many hours of exploring and learning await!
