A police officer in Bradley, Illinois, pleaded for her life before she was fatally shot with her own gun at a hotel last week, prosecutors said.

Kankakee County State’s Attorney Jim Rowe shared new details of Bradley Police Sgt. Marlene Rittmanic's last moments Monday, saying he is asking federal prosecutors to pursue the death penalty for Darius Sullivan, 25, and Xandria Harris, 26, who have been charged with first-degree murder and first-degree attempted murder.

Rittmanic, 49, was fatally shot and her partner, Officer Tyler Bailey, was critically injured after they responded to a call at a Comfort Inn in Bradley, about 60 miles south of Chicago, on Dec. 29. The call was about dogs barking in an unattended vehicle in the parking lot.

The officers found the possible owners of the vehicle in a room in the hotel and talked to them from outside the door. The subjects stepped out of the room and shot both officers, Bradley police said in a statement.
Rowe revealed at Harris’ bond hearing Monday that Sullivan emerged from the hotel room with a 9 mm handgun, NBC Chicago reported.

Sullivan pointed the gun and shot Bailey in the head and then turned the gun on Rittmanic and shot her as she tried to run away, Rowe alleged.

Rowe alleged that Sullivan chased Rittmanic down the hallway, pinned her against the door and tried simultaneously to unjam his gun and to disarm Rittmanic. Rowe accused Harris of helping him successfully disarm Rittmanic.
The pair stood over Rittmanic as she was wounded on the floor, pointing their guns at her, Rowe alleged.
“Sgt. Rittmanic was pleading with them to ‘just leave, you don’t have to do this, please just go, please don’t, please don’t,’” Rowe said.

“She was desperately pleading for her life,” he said.
Sullivan then fired two shots from what prosecutors said they believe was Rittmanic’s gun, hitting Rittmanic in the neck area, Rowe alleged.

Harris handed Sullivan keys and told him, “You have to go,” and he fled, Rowe said. She then went back to the hotel room, gathered her belongings and her two children, who were in the room, and fled, he said.

How do you possibly conclude that from what you posted. The officers were investigating a low level crime, and were surprised by an armed person who shot one of them, severely wounding him. When the other tried to get away, she was also shot and killed. No hesitance or being afraid to shoot even being suggested; no liberals or conservatives; and no misdemeanor I can see. In this case the police were called for a report of barking dogs in an unattended vehicle and then talked to two people from outside a hotel room door when one of the people pulled out a gun and shot both officers.

Why did Rittmanic try to run away? She should have drawn her service weapon and returned fire.

It’s total BS to say because of BLM or calls for police reform she was worried about using deadly force she had just seen her parter shot.

The sadder truth is that she was too scared to respond according to her training, and thus as unsuited for police work as the officers who shoot immediately and without justification mostly out of fear that makes them trigger happy. Going for a deadly weapon too quickly and not going for it at all are both signs of the same problem. And yes there is the other category of murderous bullies who have been itching for the license to kill since they were bullies on the playground.

We need to screen law enforcement officers better, and then train them better as well.

The officers first knocked on the door of room 308, but there was no answer. When officers knocked again, Bailey announced it was the police, and said they needed to address the complaint about the dogs. Harris, who was pregnant at the time, said from behind the door that she would be coming out of the room, prosecutors said.

Finally, after 14 minutes, Harris opened the door to the hotel room, prosecutors said. She tied to squeeze past the door and close it to prevent officers from arresting Sullivan – who was also in the room, prosecutors said.

As Bailey and Rittmanic kept asking Harris to stop blocking the door, Sullivan came from around the room (? — I think they meant 'door') holding a 9-mm handgun with a drum clip, prosecutors said. Sullivan shot Bailey in the head, and then fired a first shot at Rittmanic as she tried to get out of his range, prosecutors said.

The 'Chicago Piano" with the 50 round drum magazine and the violin case became notorious during the 1930's (the Auto-Ord company still sells them, semi-auto only) The Thompson submachine gun saw lots of official service during WWII. Perhaps, or perhaps she didn't want to start shooting in motel hall where more people might be hit and was retreating to a better area for such a fight. Or perhaps she knew there was someone else in the room and that she was outgunned and wanted to tactically retreat to call for backup. Or perhaps she knew there were kids in the room, and didn't want to risk their lives in a firefight. Or...

The real point is that the post gives us no idea why she chose to retreat; but using Liberty's lens every time a cop makes a decision, it is because (s)he fears problems for shooting a person of color (OK, not every time, only when the cops are white and the perp is black). BSG, I like you, and I try to respect everyone, but the motivation was the principle. I don’t like personal attacks; all they do is poison the environment and shut down discussion. I try to avoid them if I can, but I am human, or at least somewhat, so I can do it too. But since you asked, I will try to avoid responding to any personal attacks that involve you.
