I declare before you all that my whole life whether it be long or short shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong.

-- Princess Elizabeth, 21 April 1947
And she continues to live up to that promise. Long may she reign.

She’s a decent sort. Overall I think it’s ridiculous that any country has a monarchy in 2022, much less a relatively forward thinking place like the UK and most Commonwealth countries.

I’m quite disgusted that she’s decreed Camilla will be Queen Consort, as were a great many of the 15,000+ commenters on the Daily Mail last I checked this early morning. It was promised she would never be that back when they married 17 years ago. Many subjects have not forgotten Camilla’s vile behavior re: a teenaged and young adult Diana.

On the other hand, this idea of the royal sovereign has certain strengths. Here in the USofA, it is 'the people' who are sovereign and the president is the chief of state. Various academics have identified the 'problem of the commons' where anybody can graze their sheep in the village commons, so nobody takes care of it. Another way of putting it: where everybody is in charge, nobody is in charge. Is 'the Queen' any worse at opening the new public housing development or hospital than the way we do it with the local mayor or some entertainment/sport celebrity?

I think it ridiculous that the mob (i.e. non-owners of real property) have the vote. How's that working out for me?

So, Bess expresses a "sincere wish" and the hoi-polloi of the Daily Fail get their knickers twisted. Nothing new there. Probably think 'consort' is some kind of flying duck ornament for the living room.

No, but seriously, the Queen (God bless 'er) and Buck Pal never "promised" any such thing. It was Clarence House, Chuck and Camilla's people, back in 2005 who declared she would be styled HRH The Princess Consort. Never been one of those and THAT does sound like a pattern for the best sofa. [Good old Phil refused to be styled "Prince Consort" - well played sir!]

Fact is, Camilla would become queen unless Parliament made a law declaring otherwise. Charles wants her to be that and he'd walk a mile for her.

Nobody comes out well from the Princess Di debacle, including the far-from-innocent Ms. Spencer. Too many people get their "hystery" from 'The Queen' rather than reality.

Notice how she signs with "Your servant", even though she is the Queen Regnant.  This is, of course, in keeping with the motto on the coat of arms of the Prince of Wales, "Ich Dien" (German for "I serve").

Can you imagine Trump signing anything, under any circumstances, indicating his subservience to anyone?

You may say whatever you wish about the Royal House or the concept of royalty in general, but you can't deny that the lady has class.

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

There's nowhere more ridiculous than the country which voted GWB II in, then topped that by electing Trump..

No argument there, but Trump is just one person; imagine if we were saddled by a succession of his family members by law.

They would eventually be overthrown. The reason the British Monarchy still exists is they learned how to survive and adapt to the times. The monarchy wouldn’t survive a trump Monarch or quite possibly even a Johnson Monarch. There is a reason Prince Andrew was officially removed from succession even though it was already an effective possibility.

People expect Charles to be a poor monarch but even at that he isn’t anywhere near the shit show most modern politicians would make of it.

In fact the genius of the Modern British Monarchy is to stay out of it when possible
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.

Boris is worth 10,000 GWB or Trump.
