What is going on here? Should it not be illegal to kill a rapist? Was there a suspicions that it was not rape?

(Reuters) - Donations for an Iowa teenager poured in on Thursday, doubling the $150,000 amount a court ordered her to pay the family of a man whom she killed after he allegedly sexually assaulted her on multiple occasions.
As of Thursday morning, a GoFundMe fundraiser for Pieper Lewis, 17, had raised more than $340,000, well past its $200,000 goal, less than two days after a judge sentenced the Des Moines teen in the killing of her accused rapist, whom she stabbed to death in 2020.
"As the donations have increased, I am overjoyed with the prospect of removing this burden from Pieper," said Leland Schipper, her former high school math teacher, who set up the page to help pay the restitution and for her education.
Lewis pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and willful injury in June 2021, a year after she killed Zachary Brooks, 37, in Des Moines. Lewis was 15 years old and homeless when she met Brooks in May 2020.
"My story can change things. My story has changed me," Lewis said during her sentencing hearing on Tuesday. "The events that took place on that horrific day cannot be changed, as much as I wish I could."
During the hearing, Polk County District Judge David Porter sentenced Lewis to five years probation and ordered her to perform 1,200 hours of community service. He also ordered her to pay $150,000 to Brooks' family, saying he was bound by Iowa law to require her to pay restitution, the Des Moines Register reported.
Her attorneys were considering appealing the restitution order. The office of Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller said donations can be used to pay the restitution, the Des Moines Register reported.

Lewis pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and willful injury

Voluntary manslaughter - not self-defence. Voluntary. She did it on purpose. She was repeatedly trafficked for sex to various persons but this one she decided to off - don't blame her really; must have been an awful life into which she was forced.

"Voluntary" - "willful" The law provides for damages to be paid to the victim of willful injury.

And by the way, "should it not be illegal to kill a rapist?" means you are suggesting that it should be illegal, you silly billy

She begged him to stop raping her and he kept drugging her and raping her repeatedly. At some point she woke up while he was sleeping and she stabbed him repeatedly with the knife he was keeping on his bedside to threaten her with.

To my way of thinking this is no different from a battered woman defense, in which women usually will kill their attacker when he is disabled by sleep or otherwise caught unawares but the killing is motivated by the certainty in their minds that the attacker will attack freshly when he is next able - the famous case was the burning bed, made into an infamous TV movie in the 80s starting Farrah Fawcett.

The ugliest aspect of this story is that some disgusting prosecutor made the decision to charge this girl as an adult with MURDER, and to charge her with the knowledge that the penalties would include this provision that she pay restitution to her rapist’s family, a mandatory provision the judge could not suspend. The second ugliest aspect is that the POS prosecutor hasn’t yet charged the man who initially trafficked this 15 year old girl. I’m sure the prosecutor is another racist white man or woman who thinks black girls are women and they are all sluts anyway.

When I first read this story (don't recall where) it made no sense. There is a a more balanced account of the whole thing in the Des Moines Register but it still seems ridiculous. George Zimmerman got off scot free for killing Trayvon Martin and Kyle Rittenhouse killed two people who had not raped him and he got off scot free. So there may be more to the story and it appears from the Register account that both the prosecution and defense attorneys were celebrating the verdict.

But yes: in a perfect world if someone harms me - robs me or rapes me or kills me - I expect society, which I support, to avenge me and nail my robber/rapist/killer so that I, and/or my family, do not have to. But if the only way I have to protect myself against such injury is violence I think I'd choose that route. If it were after-the-fact vengeance, then no.

I’m sure the defense attorneys were celebrating that they got it knocked down from MURDER to voluntary manslaughter, and that the judge’s conscience was so shocked he suspended the sentence entirely except the mandatory restitution and community service with a provision that her record would be cleared if she successfully completes probation. That’s definitely a win when your client was initially facing up to life in prison for MURDER, a disgusting overcharge on these facts.

This ain’t heartwarming, it’s a horrible example of how girls and women are trash in the eyes of our justice system which devalues attacks on their bodily autonomy and routinely hands out slaps on the wrist to men who forcibly fuck little girls and women. ESPECIALLY black little girls and women who everybody knows are only on this planet for the pleasure of POS men.

This GIRL shouldn’t be dealing with probation and the threat of going to prison if she fails to complete it perfectly, which many can’t because plenty of law abiding people would struggle with the burden of probation conditions and a PO up the ass 24/7. This GIRL, who was raped repeatedly by numerous GARBAGE rapist men, should be in intensive counseling and provided victim services and supports and a huge apology from the system that failed her when she was abused in the home of origin and sleeping in hallways to get away from that abuse only to be abused in even worse ways by a garbage man who still hasn’t been charged with anything for trafficking this 15 year old GIRL CHILD.

Honestly I’d love a few minutes alone with the prosecutor. What a POS, I hope the voters toss this person to the curb.
