You really, really, REALLY couldn't make this shit up
Re: You really, really, REALLY couldn't make this shit up
I have nothing wrong with celebrating indigenous peoples (as generic a term as that is), even giving the celebration a federal holiday, but I don't think we need to besmirch the name of Columbus (and he has done enough of that himself) to do so. Like it or not, while others were here before him, and while other contemporaries were just as important, Columbus was emblematic of opening the Americas to the Europeans (and all the good and bad that brought with it). And, as such is key to our history, recognizing it does make sense. We Columbus a jerk? Sure, at least sometimes, but then so was Washington and other presidents (who we celebrate by a holiday in February--when he was forced to share his birthday with others persidents) so is the celebration of the end of the war to end all wars in November, and so are many of our other holidays. We have a fairly speckled history, but I do think we properly celebrate the past that made us what we are (for all the good and bad that is); we have a lot to be proud of, and a lot to be ashamed of (bu then, so does every other culture).
BP--as for your question, federal holidays are days that federal banks can be closed--state banks can also be closed on stated state holidays. If I'm not mistaken, in the UK they have holidays just denoted as "Bank Holidays".

Just changing the name to Colon Day should solve things
For Christianity, by identifying truth with faith, must teach-and, properly understood, does teach-that any interference with the truth is immoral. A Christian with faith has nothing to fear from the facts

Let's go the other way... change the names of the continents to North and South Erickson, to honor the Norse explorer who, according to the archeological evidence, actually landed on and founded a small settlement in Vinland.
This will, of course, necessitate renaming our country to the United States of Erickson — but as a plus, we can maybe convince the Scandinavian electronics company that we're naming it after THEM and negotiate a fee for naming rights.

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

Nothing wrong with Turtle Island, but that’s the name for the continent.

Back to the 2022 Campaign ....

There may be some hope that the people in this country are coming to their senses. I just pray that there are enough of them.Fourteen Members of Candidate's Family Endorse His Opponent
RENO, Nev. (AP) — Less than a month before Election Day, 14 members of Nevada Republican Senate candidate Adam Laxalt’s family sent a letter endorsing his opponent, Democratic U.S. Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto.
“We staunchly believe that Catherine is well equipped with her own ‘Nevada grit’ — a quality that she will take forward in representation of our home state for six more years across the halls of Congress,” the letter states.
The letter, first obtained by The Nevada Independent, does not mention Laxalt by name. Instead, it talks of Cortez Masto’s understanding of “the daily realities of dogged hard work” and mentions her experience in public education as well as her commitment to law enforcement. The family members also wrote that Cortez Masto’s career demonstrates she is "an authentic advocate of Nevada.”
It marks the second time that some of Laxalt’s family has endorsed his opponent. During his unsuccessful gubernatorial run in 2018, a dozen family members endorsed Democrat Steve Sisolak in an op-ed to the Reno Gazette-Journal. That letter more explicitly criticized Laxalt, saying he “leveraged and exploited” the family name throughout his campaign.

This might be the wrong heading for this piece of news: after all, he DID make it up.
According to CNN, a Trump acolyte claimed that Antifa and BLM and probably George Soros set fire to his camper van because he had Trump signs outside. But no, he eventually confessed that he had done the deed to collect insurance $$$ and $300,000 in GoFundMe cash.

Can we please reclaim the word 'mistake' to mean a temporary brain fart during which, for whatever reason, you had got to 1 + 1 = 3 or 'the capital of Australia is Sydney' or some variant thereof.Molla falsely told CNN affiliate WCCO shortly after the fire that he believed someone set the blaze in response to Trump 2020 flags he had put in his yard. “These kind of stuff should not happen, especially over beliefs of some sort,” he told WCCO.
“Mr. Molla was obviously remorseful during his federal plea hearing today,” Ryan Garry, Molla’s attorney, told CNN via email Tuesday. “It’s easy for the general public to look down on him, without knowing what was going on in his life, and cast immediate judgement. Mr. Molla is a wonderful husband and father who made a mistake that he sincerely regrets. Unlike many others, he has accepted full responsibility for his actions and is sorry for what happened.”

An Arizona County’s Refusal to Certify Election Results Could Cost GOP a House Seat
A rural Arizona county’s refusal to certify the results of the November election could cost Republicans a seat in the US House of Representatives, where they hold a narrow seven-seat majority.
Secretary of State Katie Hobbs, also the governor-elect, has gone to state court to force Cochise County to certify the election after its Republican-led Board of Supervisors failed to meet a Nov. 28 deadline while making debunked claims about the state’s voting machines.
In court papers, Hobbs’ office said that if the county refuses to certify by Dec. 8, the ballots of more than 47,000 county residents will not be included in the final tally.
That would flip the results of the race for Arizona’s Sixth Congressional District, where Republican Juan Ciscomani holds a 5,232-vote lead over Democrat Kirsten Engel in unofficial results, as well as the race for state Superintendent of Public Instruction, where the Republican candidate has a narrow lead.
“The Board’s inaction not only violates the plain language of the statute, but also undermines a basic tenet of free and fair elections in this state: ensuring that every Arizonan’s voice is heard,” the lawsuit reads.
Arizona has been a hotbed of election denial, with failed candidates for governor, senator, secretary of state and attorney general who all cast doubt on the legitimacy of the 2020 election. Failed gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake, who ran against Hobbs, has not conceded her loss, while Donald Trump has aired conspiracy theories about the state’s elections on social media.
The nonprofit Arizona Alliance for Retired Americans is also suing to try to force Cochise County to certify.
Elsewhere in Arizona, a county Board of Supervisors whose members had originally threatened to refuse to certify the results of the election ended up doing so just before the deadline. Though the Mohave County Board of Supervisors postponed the vote once, citing concerns about voting machines, it ultimately approved the results rather than risk being charged with a felony.

That Congress critter from Georgia -- Marjorie Taylor Green -- continues to astound. From the Washington Post:
"Greene warned, the House gavel — that all-important prize needed to subpoena Hunter Biden and anyone else she and the GOP want to haul before the committees they will soon control — could fall in the wrong hands. Like, Democratic hands. Or even Liz Cheney’s hands. (Yes, it could happen, she insisted on a right-wing podcast."
This is the same brilliant exemplar of the the new GOP that informed us that the wild fires that have been so destructive in California, were caused by Lasers fired from space by Jews.

The putative leader of the Republican Party issues a call to abrogate the Constitution of the United States of America, and that passes almost without comment from any Republicans of note.
But what REALLY has them furious, is that they were denied the opportunity to jerk off and blow their wads over Hunter Biden's dick pics.

And a friendly suggestion to REAL Republicans (as opposed to the MAGAts)...

If you want to return to your roots and maybe find your original principles again, the Little White Schoolhouse in Ripon, WI is still there.

Apparently the Republican House Judiciary folk published a Twit back in October which seemed to lump together several turds of a feather. It read: "Kanye. Elon. Trump."
And now they've gone and deleted it. I wonder why. It was no more than the truth, of course - but we ought to know by now that the GOP and 'truth' are uncommon bedfellows.

Poor Spicey. He's had to go through the rest of his life knowing that even Trump regretted hiring him and blamed Priebus. That's one hell of a burden to bear.
