There was a good The Atlantic piece in this issue. Briefly the point is that compromise is possible, or, to put it another way, it is possible to support trans rights without necessarily agreeing on, for example, the the right of trans-women to participate in high level sports on the same basis as cis-women because there is evidence - not yet a proven case but at least examinable at this point - that trans-women have a significant advantage. I don't mind kicking this can down the road a little until the evidence is in, which might take a year or three. And it is possible that insisting on this point led - at least partially - to the election of Trump which may be very deleterious to the overall goal of improving the lot of all trans persons, including the great majority who do not participate in high level sport.

" that trans-women have a significant advantage." And? Just what is the purpose, of separate sports records and awards for men and women? That has never, to my mind, ben generally explored. Should there be similar separation of Basketball competition between those who or over and under 6.5 inches tall? Clearly one who is over 7 feet tall does have a significant advantage over one who is 5.5 feet tall. Why is height advantage OK but hormonal advantage is not?

In my experience, the more intense the competiton and the higher the monetary consideration, the less likely it is that the participants actually want a "level playing field" They all want a situation where they, individually or their team, is at an advantage. It is a general assumption there there is such a thing as home field advantage- -why is that acceptable?

Certainly that is obvious in the area that began this thread POLITICS. The Dems and the Trumpers agree. the ballot system must be modified so their side will win, by voter elimination when the votes are counted, or by gerrymandering before the vote takes place.

I agree, and perhaps it should be explored; but remember, there are benefits to participating in sports beyond the highest level of competition (or feeding to progessional sports) which I believe was the original purpose beyond Title IX.

FWIW, we should also explore why we beleieve we need unisex bathrooms (or lavatories) and whether "better" alternatives can be implemented.
