It is the image that has come to define a pivotal point in history, capturing the moment the deadly raid on Osama Bin Laden's lair was watched in awe by the White House elite.

But it appears for one U.S. newspaper, a couple of the people sat with President Barack Obama in the Situation Room that day were not quite elite enough.




Brooklyn-based Hasidic newspaper Der Zeitung printed a story this week with a subtly manipulated version of the historic image - all the men in the photograph remain untouched but the two women in the picture have been Photoshopped out. It is thought the newspaper, which is written in Yiddish and serves a small part of the area's ultra-orthodox Jewish community, removed the women because of religious issues regarding female modesty.

While Mrs Clinton is dressed in the picture in a full jacket, wearing a top beneath that covers her almost right up to her neck, the newspaper never intentionally prints any images of women at all in case they could be considered sexually suggestive. More critical observers suggest the women have been edited by Der Zeitung, which translates as 'The Time', because of an ideological objection to women holding positions of power. The Situation Room photograph shows President Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and various other members of their inner circle watching Sunday night's Navy SEAL operation, which ended with Bin Laden being killed.

Yes. Sane people have problems with how women are treated in (some) Islamic cultures.

Anyone who has the remotest familiarity with the culture in Israel and in the broad Jewish community in the U.S. knows that those cultures have been at the forefront of promoting the social and cultural equality of women.

Too bad they didn't edit out Joe Biden, as well.

Equating the broad Jewish comminty to these guys is like equating the Christian community with the people at 12 days and counting.

To be fair, "these folks" represent only a tiny fraction of the Jewish population and are hardly courted by "all U.S. politicians" -- and not even by all politicians in Brooklyn. The majority of U.S. Jews belong to the Reform movement; the Orthodox as a whole are only about 10%, and of those the "ultra-Orthodox" who run publications like this are a small (and embarrassing) handful.

It is unclear what the rationale was for 'shopping out the women, but it's also interesting to note that on the front page of the same edition the photo accompanying the story of the President's announcement of bin Laden's killing shows only the empty podium. The on-line edition doesn't have all the pages, but you'll notice that there are generally no identifiable images of people at all -- presumably in deference to the Biblical prohibition against "graven images." My guess is they felt they could get away with running the pic as a "crowd scene" but could not show men and women together in such close proximity.

Oh and BTW the name of the publication is "Die (not "Der") Tzeitung."

Di Tzeitung said it has a "long standing editorial policy" of not publishing women's images.

It explained that its readers "believe that women should be appreciated for who they are and what they do, not for what they look like, and the Jewish laws of modesty are an expression of respect for women, not the opposite".

The weekly said Clinton, a Democrat who represented New York as a US senator, had won overwhelming majorities in the Orthodox Jewish communities because they "appreciated her unique capabilities, talents and compassion for all".

Di Tzeitung, published in Yiddish, is sold at city newsstands, especially in Brooklyn's Williamsburg and Borough Hall neighbourhoods, which have many Orthodox Jewish residents. It acknowledged it "should not have published the altered picture"
