Holden's Australian-made Chevrolet Caprice police car has scored a string of perfect 10s in an independent assessment of patrol cars by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
Police officers were asked to rank 16 different vehicles that car makers have specially tuned for law-enforcement duties, with the 6.0-litre V8 one of few vehicles tested to earn a run of clean sweeps.According to a 174-page report released by the department this week that ranks each vehicle, the only criticism levelled at the Caprice by the test drivers after a punishing high-speed track session was the stability control, which officers said cut in too early and severely. Even so, it was enough for the testing officers to give the Caprice the only perfect score of 10 out of 10.
The Holden Caprice-based police car also scored a perfect 10 in a police pursuit simulation, but this time for the E85 version of the vehicle.
According to the report, steering, body lean and bounce were more noticeable in the petrol-engined version of the Caprice.
The Caprice also had the highest average speed through the high-speed part of the assessment, and one of the highest rear-drive average speeds through the simulated pursuit component.
Most impressive, though, were the brakes. Under stimulated emergency stopping from 60mph, the Caprice posted the shortest braking distance of the 16 vehicles tested.
Test vehicles included all-wheel-drive, front- and rear-drive sedans, and soft-roaders, with engines ranging from turbocharged V6s to V8s.
Brands included Chevrolet, Dodge, and Ford, which even allowed the sheriff's department to test several prototype police cars as part of the evaluation.
Fuels tested ranged from petrol to E85 and even compressed natural gas.
