All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

Thanks for that excerpt and article BSG...

Now I think I understand the nature of the appeal better; apparently there were a lot of sub-themes in the series that were going on that someone (like me) who only knew the basic outlines of the main premise would be unaware of...
For gay men — always drawn to empowered women with a sense of style (see Xena)
Hey, a lot of straight men liked Xena too...(that's where I got "the Warrior Princess" nickname for my daughter)

I saw Xena as a campy updated version of the leggy lasses in those old Republic Films "Amazon Queen" B-flicks from the 40's and 50's...

(Of course the intended lesbian under current of the relationship she had with her little Valley Girl sidekick was pretty obvious...)

You're pop culture knowledge is sadly lacking...
And this would be a bad thing........................because?

Hey, I'm the guy who's proud of the fact that when People Magazine comes out with it's annual list of the "The 25 Most Intriguing" people for that year, I'm lucky if I can recognize six or seven of them....

On the other hand, if you were to layout pictures of the 100 members of the US Senate, I could probably pair up better than two thirds of them with their names....

Yeah, I know...

that talent makes me pure magic at cocktail parties.... :D

What other folks have said is true, but just to add to it...

The show was in essence a story about what it's like to grow up as a teenager/early 20-something. All of the plot lines were metaphors for some aspect of teenage life, and the demons and slaying thereof were just a literary device for bringing the metaphor to life. I think a lot of the appeal for lesbian and gay people was due to the fact that so many of those metaphors were about what it was like to go through high school as an outsider (all of the Scooby gang, i.e. Bufffy and her friends, were misfits in some way), something that LGBT folks obviously identify with. Having Willow come to the realization that she is a lesbian certainly attracted LGBT fans, but was itself also just another metaphor for that underlying theme.

In spite of the offbeat premise, it does examine some very serious issues (addiction, abusive relationships, etc.) in a non-preachy but in some ways a fairly conservative outlook. For example, there is an episode called "Band Candy" in which all the adults who eat the chocolate bars being sold as a fundraiser for the school band revert to a teenage mentality, and how the entire town almost goes to hell (literally as well as figuratively) as a result. The (unstated) moral of the story is that kids need their parents to be parents and not their best buddy. Likewise the episodes that deal with addictions avoid the hamfisted, Nancy Reaganesque "just say no" technique but are nevertheless clear in their message that kids of that age should not be experimenting with mind altering substances. Pretty much every episode involving the characters having sex carries the subtext that teenagers are not mature enough to deal with the consequences.

Ok, he's no Hulk Hogan, but if you saw them flexed while he was sword fighting with some demon, they looked damn good for a fairly average-built guy (as did the chest when he was in a swimsuit :P)

Never mind, I guess that wouldn't be something that grabbed your eye...

Perhaps you should be more concerned about your wife admiring an old fart's ass

Why is it that when Miley Cyrus gets naked and licks a hammer it's 'art' and 'edgy' but when I do it I'm 'drunk' and 'banned from the hardware store'?

I was just trying to think of an example of steroid-enhanced over-development.

I was actually agreeing with you. My wife worries about my penchant for viewing well built men (for aesthetic reasons only I assure you.)
