Shed loads of trouble...

SEEMS LABOR CAN’T EVEN BUILD A RURAL FIRE SHED RIGHT

The woes of ACT Labor’s infrastructure record continues with the long awaited $800,000 new rural fire shed for Jerrabomberra not being built large enough to house the station’s vehicles and volunteers, Shadow Minister for Emergency Services, Brendan Smyth, said today.

It was revealed in Estimates yesterday that the Jerrabomberra fire shed is so tight for room that two of the four bays were too small for the trucks and rural fire fighting volunteers to get out on both sides.

“This is just the latest embarrassing infrastructure delivery error for ACT Labor Minister Simon Corbell, who was forced to admit the project wasn’t up to scratch and that remedial work would be extremely expensive,” Mr Smyth said.

Already years behind schedule the Minister told the Estimates committee the alternative for volunteers was to park the station’s vehicles outside the $800,000 purpose built shed.

“This is the response from the Minister whose track record includes the massive overrun and false openings of the ACT’s only prison and the now famous half built blow-out of the Gungahlin Drive Extension.

“With not even the most of basic projects up to scratch it is quite clear that Labor hasn’t learnt their lesson from the significant time and cost blow-outs of major infrastructure projects like the GDE, Cotter Dam and the Prison.

“They might have a new leader, but nothing has changed when it comes to delivering major projects to scope,” Mr Smyth concluded.

more council shennanigans...
A ROW has broken out over whether the pool at Portsmouth’s newest sports complex lives up to its Olympic billing.

Tory councillors in Portsmouth City Council have accused the leading Lib Dem group of mistakes in their bid to have an Olympic pool built at the Mountbatten Centre.

The centre is operated by Parkwood Leisure, which describes the £5m pool as ‘Olympic-sized’ and ‘Olympic-standard’.

But Tories say the pool, part of a £20m investment in the Alexandra Park, Stamshaw, centre, is two inches too short to be used by Olympic athletes.
Lib Dems deny the claim, but admit touch-sensitive ‘time boards’ necessary for the Olympic Games would take up around two inches, meaning the pool would not be suitable.

However they say it fulfils all the regulations to be used for training, during which stopwatches are used for timing.

Tory councillor Jim Fleming said: ‘It’s a mistake. It’s not long enough to meet Olympic standards.

‘It was a council mix-up, a failure to deliver, and the cabinet should admit it and apologise to the city.’

And Tory Cllr Donna Jones said: ‘It may be there was no plan for the pool to be used in competition, but the centre was to be used as a training centre for Olympic athletes, including swimmers. ‘

The pool has a certificate of approval from the Amateur Swimming Association and one from an international swimming body which says it is ‘within the acceptable tolerances’ of the organisation.

The council’s leader for sport, Cllr Lee Hunt, said: ‘It was never to be used for the Olympics. It can be used for training and competitions.

‘But it was designed to have eight lanes, without two empty outside lanes necessary for international racing.

‘It was developed in partnership with national sporting bodies and we were aware of this when voting for it.’

A local 50m pool was just widened by a couple of inches for the same reason. You would think there would be an expert somewhere who could help folks figure this out before they build the darn thing.

Measure twice, cut once.

Is the problem the architect and the plans, on the builder and interpretation thereof? I'm not really sure how you can blame an entire political party for the problem . . .

It is an extremely embarrassing error that should not have been paid for. From what I understand Guin it was a contractors error. but naturally the Department should have picked it up before construction was commenced.

I don't think you should blame the Government for the stupidity of the Department.

In a similar incident, there is a bloke not too far from where I live who had a lovely "double" car port built at the front of his house. When it was finished and his boat stored safely inside to the right, I witnessed him parking his SUV next to it. It was a beautiful sight.

Unfortunately, there was not enough room for him to open his door and he had to drive out in order to get out.

Laugh?

I mustard mitt I did.
Bah!
