The Whole Witch/Vampire thing

Post by Guinevere »

Let me start my saying I'm not a Vampire fan. I never read the Anne Rice books, the whole Twilight "saga" (and the books themselves) nauseated me, and I have never watched Buffy, Angel, or True Blood.

But a couple of friends and one of my favorite librarians recommended "A Discovery of Witches" by Deborah Harkness, and I'm totally, totally hooked (I'm half-way done and can't wait to finish the rest on the beach this weekend). God knows why, but the book is incredibly charming, and very well written. The NPR review linked below says it pretty well . . .

Has anyone else read it, or is reading it?

Not come across it, but thanks for the heads up and review, it sounds ideal for Hatch who loves these sorts of things...
'Intelligent and off-the-wall, it will be irresistible to Twilight fans'

(The Sunday Times )

'Write what you know, debut novelists are told and Professor Deborah Harkness has accordingly set hers in the world of academia... A bubbling cauldron of illicit desire...all the ingredients for an assured saga that blends romance with fantasy'

(Daily Mail )

'An inventive addition to the supernatural craze... Historian Harkness's racy paranormal romance has exciting amounts of spells, kisses and battles, and is recounted with enchanting, page-turning panache'

(Marie Claire )

'...notable debut...A romp through magical academia'

(Guardian )

Isn't that what they're angling for, SMF? Separating them might be better punishment....

And here I was, thinking ya'll cared about my book. I stayed up far too late last night reading, and I'm awake again at 5am and about to read more. It really is a good story!

"The Naughty Corner" sounds like a place they'd enjoy being.

True Blood is a good series and has yet to disappoint (even while flirting with crossing a line the screenwriter/producer trampled over in past projects)

Nah, I've had enough of Vamp. Anne Rice resurged the interest in Nosferatu, but at least she stuck to the mythos pretty well; these days- folks are pretty much making it up as they go along. The original vampyre was cursed as an 'undead': a creature that was killed, but not allowed to leave its corpse; that could only animate the dead body by stealing the life blood of the living.

Now: Hollywierd says vampires can be born and sire offspring. Huh? How can the dead to that? Procreation is done by the living: life begets life; death can not beget life.
