Mass grave in Liberty County Texas

Police in Texas may have found a mass grave at a rural house containing up to 30 dismembered bodies, possibly all children, according to local media reports.

The grisly find was reportedly made at a rural house in Liberty County, east of Houston.

According to KPRC television, the Liberty County sheriff's office said 25 to 30 bodies were found by officers acting on a tip-off.

FBI spokeswoman Kim Barkhausen in Houston confirmed to the Reuters news agency that the FBI had been asked to help with an investigation, but would not elaborate.

Preliminary reports indicated the bodies are those of children, the TV station reported.

One local paper, the Cleveland Advocate, said the tipster told authorities dozens of dismembered bodies were buried at the scene.

(CBS/KHOU) LIBERTY COUNTY, Texas - There are conflicting reports of a mass grave found near Hardin, Texas, approximately 50 miles northeast of Houston.

Liberty County sheriff's deputies are currently on the scene at the home where a tipster reportedly told them 25 to 30 dismembered bodies are buried

CBS affiliate KHOU reports that a law enforcement source said that a mass grave was found by police.

According to the Houston Chronicle, the tip came from a psychic and no bodies have been confirmed on the site.

Property owner Joe Bankston said he's shocked by the reports of bodies on his property.

"This is like something out of a novel," Bankston said by phone from Dallas, reports KHOU.

Bankston said his daughter lives in the house.

He said there's blood on the porch and in the house because his daughter's former boyfriend tried to commit suicide a couple of weeks ago.

"He got drunk and cut his wrist," Bankston said. "It took me all day to clean the inside of the house. I'm not sure I got it [the blood] all."

The boyfriend, an Army soldier who was AWOL, is now in a military psychiatric ward in Killeen, according to Bankston. He said a police report was filed with the sheriff's department after the suicide attempt.

Bankston said he's owned the property for a little over three years. He admitted his son, Joe, is a convicted sex offender, but said he hasn't lived in Hardin for over a year.

"He lived with us for a little while, but had to go to Michigan about a year ago for a court appearance and never came back," Bankston said. "Last I heard, he was in Ohio."

The tip came in to police Tuesday afternoon, and the tipster claimed that dozens of dismembered bodies were buried in the grave, according to local paper The Cleveland Advocate.

About 15 sheriff's department vehicles and at least one cadaver dog are on the scene.

The Beaumont FBI office has also been asked to assist in the investigation.

KHOU reports that police are waiting to obtain a warrant to further search the property.

No bodies have been found at a US farmhouse where a person claiming to be a psychic told officials multiple bodies were buried, a Texas sheriff's official says.
Liberty County Sheriff's Captain Rex Evans said there was no indication of bodies being anywhere on the rural property about 113 kilometres north-east of Houston.

Officials said the sheriff's office had received two calls from a person who said dismembered bodies would be found.

Mr Evans said authorities took the tip seriously in part because the caller had details about the interior of the house that only someone who had seen it could have known.

He said authorities had a name and number for the caller and were working to track the person down.

Asked if authorities thought the tip was a hoax, Mr Evans said only that they found no bodies or anything to indicate a homicide had occurred there.
