Rioting Canadians:
Riots erupt in Vancouver after Canucks loss

Dozens injured amid scenes of violence, looting

Riot police fired tear gas, pepper spray and flash bombs in downtown Vancouver Wednesday night to try to disperse angry rioters who set cars on fire, looted stores and taunted police officers after the Canucks' 4-0 Stanley Cup final loss to the Boston Bruins.

Police declared the downtown fan zone area near the CBC building and the central post office a riot zone. Anyone not leaving the West Georgia Street area immediately could be arrested, they warned.

Police used batons and also turned police dogs on the rioters, slowly pushing the crowd back along Georgia Street from Hamilton Street to Cambie Street.

Two police cars were set on fire in a parking lot on Cambie Street near one of the areas where police were being confronted by a few dozen people among the hundreds present who were throwing debris at officers.

The riots shook Vancouver residents, and prompted thousands to sign up to a Facebook campaign that aimed to identify rioters and looters. There is also a campaign underway to get people to clean up the city, beginning Thursday morning.

Witnesses were encouraged by Facebook campaign organizers to post pictures of rioters in the act, in the hopes that they might be recognized and identified. More than 20,000 people had joined by the morning Thursday.

"Prosecute the thugs," wrote Lorraine Bennett on the site. "Clearly they hate the Canucks, they hate Vancouver."
'Unfortunately, the tables have turned tonight'

Most people who stayed in the riot areas were watching the confrontation, while a few young men who covered their faces were confronting police.

"You don't ever hope for a situation like this," said Vancouver police Const. Jana McGuinness.
Rioting can carry a life sentence

Under Sections 67-68 of the Criminal Code of Canada, a public official may read what's colloquially called the "Riot Act" in order to disperse an unruly crowd:

"Her Majesty the Queen charges and commands all persons being assembled immediately to disperse and peaceably to depart to their habitations or to their lawful business on the pain of being guilty of an offence for which, on conviction, they may be sentenced to imprisonment for life."

People who do not "peaceably disperse" within 30 minutes are "guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for life."

"You celebrate the good times and you prepare for the bad times and that's exactly what we've done. Unfortunately, the tables have turned tonight."

In addition to the riot police, officers were also called in from several neighbouring departments to help control the unruly crowd.

Vancouver fire department Capt. Gabe Roder said it was not clear how many fires had been set. Fire crews were instructed to leave the downtown core by police, and the department made a decision early in the evening to respond to fires only where the public was in danger.

Officials say dozens of people were injured, but most were being treated for tear gas or pepper spray exposure.

Vancouver General Hospital officials said there were two major traumas, three stabbing victims and one head injury.

A spokesperson for St. Paul's Hospital said the emergency room had seen at least 57 people with injuries related to the riot, most of whom were treated for tear gas exposure and released. Others, officials said, were cut with broken glass or had fractured bones. There was one major trauma, officials said, but released no further details.

B.C. Ambulance also confirmed that a man had fallen or jumped off the Dunsmuir Viaduct and was in critical condition in hospital.

A number of cars had also been set alight in a parkade at West Georgia Street and Seymour Street.

Vandals were seen jumping on a pair of police cars in a parking lot on Cambie Street. One of the cars had been turned on its side but later was righted.

TransLink had stopped all bus service to and from the downtown area, but SkyTrains were still running to and from downtown stations.

Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson said the situation was "despicable."

"It's absolutely disgraceful and shameful and by no means represents the city of Vancouver," said Robertson. "We've had a great run in the playoffs here, great celebrations, and what's happened tonight is despicable."

"We are dealing with a small number of troublemakers," said the mayor. "They will be held accountable. There's a lot of photographic evidence. We're asking people to keep whatever pictures they're taking… because these people will be held accountable for this."

It's something about hockey (particularly losing, but sometimes even winning) that brings out the worst in us.

Montreal is probably the worst in this regard; police are always on standby waiting for a riot to happen whenever the Canadiens are playing an important game. But Vancouver has had its share as well.

Toronto, strangely, seems to be exempt, even as fanatical as Maple Leafs fans are. But then, I suppose they figure that if they were to riot every time the Leafs lost, they wouldn't have time for anything else.

Maybe it wasn't such a good idea to have giant TV screens downtown, and have 100000 plus drunk morons gather there...

I was rooting for Boston. Vancouver fans are generally douchebags. :nana

I admit I was an ice (and lacrosse) bunny in college, but haven't really followed pro hockey much. It's been a blast following the Bruins this year and this post-season. I have to say, I've been completely underwhelmed by the Canuck fans and team, and especially last night -- they even had the audacity to boo Tim Thomas when he was awarded the Conn-Smythe last night, and then went on to the horrific looting. What a bunch of miserable sore losers.

End times news?
US beer company Budweiser has been named as the first US sponsor of English football's FA Cup, in a three-year deal.

The amount of money paid by the firm, owned by St Louis-based Anheuser-Busch, has not been disclosed.

Budweiser has been a sponsor of the football World Cup for 25 years and also backs US motorsport.

The FA Cup had been sponsored by energy giant E.On for five years, from 2006 to 2011.

The competition will now be known as the FA Cup with Budweiser.

"We are extremely pleased to have secured an iconic brand such as Budweiser to be the lead partner of the FA Cup," said FA General Secretary Alex Horne.

The cup, currently held by Manchester City after they beat Stoke City in May's final, is the world's oldest domestic competition.

It means England's two domestic cups are now sponsored by beer brands, with Carling the title sponsor of the League Cup

That is fucked up! The FA Cup is a competition which should never be branded. Even E.On didn't interfere with it's naming...

You wait mate, it'll be four twenty minute "quarters", with half an hour in-between each for advertising and fucking sousaphone bands next!

Alex Ferguson will need a new watch... :D

You really think they'll wait for a break to sling on ads? It'll be everytime the ball goes out of play.
And they'll make the goals twice as big to try and up the scoring rate. ;)

To be fair, they would have rioted if the Canucks had won as well. Douchebags made the city of Vancouver, and indirectly, all of Canada look bad.

Gob, that couple has been identified, and the reason for the kiss as well. Linky

In a related note, it must be a good time to be a sports fan in Boston, all of the major league teams have now won at least one championship in the past seven years. Wish I was a Boston sports fan... but I'm not.

Beer Sponge, its been an incredible run - I moved here 12 years ago, and we've had seven championships in that time! We are well to be being good and truly spoiled here in the Hub of the Universe

Maybe you're good luck Guin! Care to move a bit more north? My team hasn't done so well lately...

I'm an Oilers fan, btw. You know, the 30th place NHL team, last two seasons. :shrug Oh well, next year will be better!

Beer Sponge, the most ridiculous aspect of this all is that the team with the longest "drought" is the Pats --the ones who started it all. And BTW, Boston College and Boston University hockey teams won the NCAA Championship four times in that same period. So we actually have 11 national and world championships since 2001.

Vancouver riot kissing couple identified

Riot Breaks Out After Game In Vancouver Getty Images

It’s perhaps the lasting image from the inexplicable and foolish rioting in Vancouver that erupted after the Canucks Game 7 loss to Boston in the Stanley Cup finals. A young couple laid out in the street between rioters and riot police caught up in the moment somewhere between feeling amorous and defying a police order. I know that always sets the mood for me.

The one mystery that still lingered on was just who were these lovebirds that find the smell of tear gas to be romantic? That mystery is now at an end as CBC did some digging to figure out just who was who that was mixing it up in the madness and making us think of a certain Beatles song.

As it turns out the couple makes for quite the fun story on their own. From CBC News:

The mystery identity of the couple kissing while lying on a Vancouver street as riot police battled crowds following the Canucks’ Stanley Cup loss has been revealed as Australian Scott Jones and his Canadian girlfriend Alex Thomas.

Jones’s family said he has been in Canada for six months, working as a bartender and trying to break into acting and standup comedy. At least one of his comedy routines has been posted on YouTube.

That’s quite the perfect spot for a guy who’s hoping to become famous to be caught in. As it turns out, Scott’s father Brett was able to confirm it was his son Scott all the way from Perth, Australia as the photo became a viral hit almost immediately.

Brett Jones said the couple had been at the NHL final game, and after the frenzy following the loss spilled into the street, the two were caught in the violence.

“They were between the riot police and the rioters, and the riot police were actually charging forward, and Alex got knocked by a [police] shield and fell to the ground,” he told CBC News. “[Scott] was comforting her and gave her a kiss to say, ‘It’s going to be OK,’ and the photographer just took the shot at that moment.”

Brett Jones said Scott is fine, and Alex suffered a bruised leg from falling to the ground.

With Jones and Thomas now being identified, we’ve got a funny feeling their newly found fame is going to ensure that they’re seen a lot more on TV and the Internet for quite some time. The photo is incredible and the moment of “serenity amongst madness” gives you the kind of emotion that is so rarely seen in any sort of photography. While the situation was terrible and the reasons for it happening are nonsensical, it’s amazing to see something so seemingly beautiful to come out of it. Here’s to hoping their fame doesn’t go to their heads.

Might have guessed it would be an Aussie..
When Australian Scott Jones first saw a photo of himself kissing his girlfriend in the midst of the riots in Vancouver last week, he said: "Oh my god."

The 29-year-old aspiring comedian and actor from Perth and his Canadian girlfriend Alexandra Thomas said they had been overwhelmed by calls from media outlets and offers to appear on television after the photo from a Getty Images freelance photographer - dubbed the "Vancouver Riot Kiss" - was published last week.

"When we first saw it, it was funny you know, we got on the news, that's all there is ... And then it took off. It was interesting. It was huge," Mr Jones told national broadcaster Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC).

The couple said they were making their way across Granville in downtown Vancouver after the Stanley Cup final between ice hockey teams the Vancouver Canucks and the Boston Bruins.

A riot broke out after the Canucks' lost, and Mr Jones and Ms Thomas found themselves trapped on a street as riot police charged towards them.

"We realised they were coming towards us. They weren't reasoning with people," Ms Thomas said.

"I was starting to get really frightened because I'd never experienced anything like that before, and it's really scary.

"I remember falling and saying, 'Please don't hurt us.' Saying, 'I don't want to be caught up in the middle of this.' I just wanted to get out of there but my body stopped reacting to the need to get out of there ... I don't really know exactly what happened. I was really upset. That's why I really needed to be calmed down and get out of there safely."

Mr Jones said: "So I went back for her. They started beating us with the shields, like trying to get us to move.

"I don't know why. We weren't being aggressive towards [police] or anything like that. But eventually they passed over us. And that's when we were on the ground. She was a bit hysterical afterwards, obviously, and I was just trying to calm her down."

A Canadian woman who witnessed the whole incident, Angela Nicholson, said Mr Jones tried to shield his girlfriend with his body when the riot police raised their batons and looked to be about to hit the couple.

"Alex had one arm wrapped around Scott and the other hand up towards the riot police, palm forward, fingers spread, saying, 'Stop!' and 'Please!'," she told the CBC.

"I could hear her very clearly from where I was. The couple stayed there helpless at the feet of two riot cops for at least 30 seconds.

"Finally the riot cops stepped over them and reformed the line they had come from. The street cleared and the two were left lying alone in the street. No police officer checked to see if they were OK."

Ms Nicholson said the moment when the couple embraced was "the most amazing thing to witness" and "such tenderness among such chaos".

"I immediately went over to them to help. I saw [Ms Thomas] was pale and her eyes were wide open - as big as they could possibly get. Her stomach was locked so tightly she couldn't lie down fully. It was like she was stuck doing sit-ups. This lasted for at least three minutes. After I told her she was safe, her stomach relaxed.

"Scott was very pale. He went silent but kept caressing his girlfriend. I could see and hear his heart pounding in his chest. He held her so softly and so close."

Mr Jones, who has been living in Canada for six months according to media reports, said he thought the police overreacted and treated innocent bystanders in the same way as the rioters.

"They treated us all like criminals."

The couple said they were continuing with their plans to fly to the United States as part of a holiday and had turned down interviews with two major US television programs - The Today Show and Good Morning America.

"It's just too much," Mr Jones told CBC. "We just don't need the extra stress. We are totally booked up for the next three weeks. We have everything planned. We can't change anything."

Ms Thomas said they had been looking forward to their holiday for months.

"We're just going to go spend time together," she said.
