CSB
Re: CSB
This is odd...
I know there was a period of time through 2001 where I was posting both at the CSB and the Cafe Darte...gradually more and more at the CSB and less at the Cafe...
I know for a fact I was posting at the CSB at the time of 9/11 and thereafter because I have a distinct recollection of all of the expressions of sympathy that were made at the time by the non-US members...
But I can't for the life of me remember this "Turing " character...

Re: CSB
Do you remember a time when every second thread was rendered unreadable by the sudden appearance of huge pics?
Why is it that when Miley Cyrus gets naked and licks a hammer it's 'art' and 'edgy' but when I do it I'm 'drunk' and 'banned from the hardware store'?
Re: CSB
That's what I was thinking, too. Was he the guy who was constantly illegibilizing threads with outlandishly oversized visual material, who evidently believed that every thread should have about issues related to Palestine -- and was determined to make them so, no matter what -- and who stomped off in a huff because someone "disabled Flash" (whatever that means)?
Reason is valuable only when it performs against the wordless physical background of the universe.

Re: CSB
Turing was the guy with the oversize pics but if my memory serves it was Rev Myk who had the issue over flash being disabled - though I could be wrong as my perimenopauseal memory is not as it should be

If you can keep your head while those around you are losing theirs, you may have misjudged the situation.
Re: CSB
Rev Myk didn't have any issue with flash he had a big one with Ed though. They spent most of their time yelling about how they agreed with each other.
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.
Re: CSB
That was oo bad about Turing, he was going to make the first CSB T-shirts.
Re: CSB
Not yet. From Gar today (on both boards):
I am still trying to clear up the database and add some new code to the CSB MK5 (the .com site). One of the new pieces of code that I am developing is a method by which 'Commenting Spam' - those posts and topics that are not so obviously spam until after you read them, will be lessened. The difficulty comes in the ability to correctly distinguish the difference between spammers and regular users. This may involve requiring our human posters to identify themselves as such though an extra step inserted in the posting/commenting process. There are two options:
•The use of a CAPTCHA (The Turing Test named after a computer scientist Alan Turing - Completely Automated Public Turing Test to Tell Computers and Humans Apart - wow doesn't that sound familiar).
•There other method is to enlist the help of some of our members to manually remove a post if it is determined to be spam. Given the circumstances of how close this is to 'editing of members posts', and the banality of the work, I am less inclined to adopt this method.
I am also trying out some new code to make the registration process better able to weed out potential spammers and 'ghost accounts'. All of this is in an effort to make the CSB less susceptible to spammers and more agreeable to desired user provided content. Please continue to bear with me on this process.

Re: CSB
Alan Turing is almost erased from history.
Re: CSB
If by this:
When dealing with the spammers, one has to consider costs versus benefits. No system is going to work 100%; human intervention and manual maintenance is always going to be required. I'm not aware of any forum that is dealing with the spam problem by compelling those who want to post to re-enter a captcha every time they post.
If your goal is to build up participation and and attract new participants, I can't think of a whole lot of ideas that would be more counter-productive than this. (And it won't be that effective in dealing with the spammers anyway, since there are plenty of captcha reading softwares and services that are available)
You don't want to try and solve a gopher problem with hand grenades....
He means having people enter a captcha every time they post, I really think that would be counter-productive; a cure worse than the disease...This may involve requiring our human posters to identify themselves as such though an extra step inserted in the posting/commenting process.

Re: CSB
I sent Gar a reply to that post of his, suggesting that the CAPTCHA be used only for a poster's first post and that a co-operative effort between members and administrators (like here, and like even Gwen used to control spam at the old CSB) be used to identify and remove any spam that gets through. I was glad to see the update and I wish him luck getting things up and running; only time will tell if the CSB will ever truly recover.Lord Jim wrote:If by this:

People who are wrong are just as sure they're right as people who are right. The only difference is, they're wrong.
