I seem to remember reading a long time ago in a galaxy far away that George Lucas at one time planned to make a third trilogy: the first trilogy (episodes 4-5-6) being the middle, the second (episodes 1-2-3) being the beginning, the third (episodes 7-8-9) being the end. The only characters that were going to continue through the whole nine episodes were C3PO and R2D2.

The last I heard was that George is tired of the whole thing. But the Clone Wars TV series is still running on the Cartoon Network. So I wouldn't be suprised if more movies surfaced.

the original animated clone wars by Genndy Tartakovsky and his team had much more continuity and heart.

R2 was a maintenance astromech droid on Padme's Nubian ship. He gained favor after saving the ship by repairing the shields, then somehow became their constant companion. Ani later modified R2 extensively, improving his AI, and overall functionality.

Currently Luke has found some recordings on R2 of his father, and mother. Luke spent a couple of books trying to find how to access all of these files, but was unsuccessful. It turned out that R2 was hiding the files intentionally, and that they'd have to wipe R2's memory to access to files. It hasn't been mentioned again...
