A man has hijacked a car while taking it for a test drive - after leaving his driver's licence details with the Sydney car yard, police say.
The man visited a car yard at Warwick Farm, in Sydney's southwest and asked to test drive a 2007 model Mitsubishi Lancer, police said.
He agreed to have his licence photocopied before he and a salesman left the dealership in the car shortly after 2pm yesterday, police said.
A short time later, the salesman stopped the vehicle and left the driver's seat so the man could take the wheel, police said.
Instead, the man locked the doors and jumped into the driver's seat, police said.
After a short struggle with the car salesman through a partially open window, he drove away, police said.
Police went to the address on the man's driver's licence, in Hurlstone Park, where they allegedly found the Lancer in the driveway.
They arrested and charged a the man, 26, with assault with intent to take and drive a vehicle.
He was bailed to appear at Burwood Local Court on July 28.

A small flaw in his car theft plan
“If you trust in yourself, and believe in your dreams, and follow your star. . . you'll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren't so lazy.”
Re: A small flaw in his car theft plan
He probably just wanted a useful test drive, including keeping it overnight to see how it starts up when cooled off.

Do you know this idiot? Police have released this photo of the boat yard thief in Blyth taken as he tried to conceal his identity by disabling the CCTV camera that captured this image
There's little better than a full-face close-up in a CCTV camera for identifying a criminal.
And that is what this bungling thief obligingly provided when he broke into a boat yard.
He was, in fact, attempting to climb up the pole supporting the camera to disable the device. Unfortunately for him, his picture was captured just before he got to the camera.
The youth had broken into the yard, in Blyth, Northumbria, with his friend. The pair helped themselves to a dinghy and used it to cross the River Blyth from the south side to the north of the town.
After making their journey, they abandoned the boat and continued towards North Blyth on foot.
Police are today appealing for witnesses to the break-in, which happened between 4.20am and 4.30am on Saturday, June 19.

Re: A small flaw in his car theft plan
It's catching on..
A bungling thief became the face of crime that does not pay when he provided police with his own mugshot while stealing CCTV equipment from a pub.
Armed with little more than a Swiss Army knife, the hapless thief spent four hours dismantling the equipment seemingly unaware his every move was being caught on camera.
His girlfriend also made a fleeting appearance in the footage - but had the sense to stay out of the limelight.
The burglar struck at the former Lister Arms pub next to Bradford's busy Manchester Road at 4am on Sunday.
Owner Amjad Ali, a solicitor who is converting the premises into offices for his law firm, said: ‘Originally I was frustrated. But when I saw the footage I thought it was hilarious.
‘The criminal underworld is going to be upset - he is giving them a bad name. He is practically kissing the camera at one stage.’
The thief did not finish unscrewing the last of the four cameras he targeted until 8am - less than an hour before the congregation turned up to worship at the church next door.
‘For much of the time, he was balanced perilously on the 10cm wide railing of the fire escape, above a ten foot drop.
‘If he had slipped he would have broken his neck. The amount he will get for the cameras he would have got more working for minimum wage,’ added Mr Ali, 37.
At first, the burglar is seen walking around the premises, checking the coast is clear, before removing the first camera and slipping it into his jacket pocket.
Wiping his brow, he then got to work on other cameras, struggling to remove the six inch bolts securing them to the building.
The camera that gave him the most trouble provided the best close ups - as he struggled to yank the cables free from the walls.
He turned the camera around to face himself, unaware that while it was off the wall it was still live and transmitting colour images to a hard drive in the upstairs of the pub.
Shots included close ups of his eye-catching black Reebok trainers and the jerking cables until he finally managed to wrench the equipment free of the wall at 8.01am.

Triplets?
A bungling burglar jailed for breaking into a hospital was snared after leaving his bail notice at the scene of the crime.
Prolific burglar Daniel Garvey, 21, of no fixed abode, broke into an office at Salford Royal Hospital through a roof tile.
He trashed the office and stole items and cash worth £1,000 and caused £2,000 worth of damage. Police were able to identify Garvey by a bail notice from Salford Magistrates Court he had left in the room, along with his blood and fingerprints.
An appeal was put out for his arrest and he was captured as he attempted to steal from Manchester University just weeks later.
Members of staff at the Samuel Alexander building became suspicious of Garvey, who was pretending to be a student, and called police.
Garvey pleaded guilty to burglary and burglary with intent and was sentenced to a total of 10 months in prison.
Another offence of stealing a satnav from a car in Salford was included in the sentence.
The court heard how Garvey had grown up in care and suffered from attention deficit disorder and Tourettes and had tried to self harm and take his own life in the past.
Defence Duncan Philips said Garvey has turned to cannabis to cope with his problems and committed crimes to pay for his financial debts.
He had 17 previous offences and been jailed in the past.

Father Ted I know what's going on, Pat Mustard. There are some very hairy babies on Craggy Island, and I think you are the hairy baby-maker.
Pat Mustard: Oh, yeah? Well, I think that you would need proof if you were going to make that sort of an accusation. And I'm a very careful man, Father. A very careful man!
Father Ted: Except when it comes to taking precautions in the bedroom.
Pat Mustard: Ah, w-... you certainly wouldn't be advising the use of artificial contraception now, Father, would you?
Father Ted: Yes, I... well... if you're going to be... of course you will... JUST FECK OFF!

Re: A small flaw in his car theft plan
When the attempted armed robbery was foiled by a brave shopkeeper, Anthony Gorman could at least be happy he made his escape without being apprehended.
He was dragged around the store and had his gun, balaclava and hoodie-style jacket taken and was chased off empty handed. But seemingly oblivious to the adage about never returning to the scene the crime, the gormless 21-year-old returned minutes later to ‘politely’ beg for his favourite £200 coat back. Surprised shopkeeper Michael Singh, who had been meditating when the raid happened, simply turned to his attacker and asked: ‘Are you stupid?’
Mr Singh, who moments earlier had a gun pointed at his neck by Gorman, added: ‘No, you can't have it. Get out.’ It only gets worse for Gorman, who was nicknamed Spider. Without his disguise the shop keeper in Longsight, Manchester recognised him and he was arrested the same day. Today he was jailed for four and a half years after admitting aggravated burglary and possession of an imitation firearm.
Mr Singh said: ‘I just cannot believe anyone could be so stupid as to ask for his coat back after bungling a robbery. He should have just cut his losses and run.

Re: A small flaw in his car theft plan
It gets better!!!
A man who allegedly broke into his ex-partner’s home, stole $3, and made a video of himself performing a lewd act has been sent to hospital for mental health treatment.
Jan Moerkerke, 29, was armed with a piece of timber, a skipping rope and a “safe sex pack” when he broke into the O’Connor home on the weekend and filmed himself in the main bedroom, a court heard.
He allegedly left the videocamera on the windowsill with a note saying he had stolen $3 and instructions to press play on the camera.
Moerkerke’s former girlfriend no longer lives in the house and the lewd video was instead viewed by her horrified tenant, who called police.
In the ACT Magistrates Court this afternoon Moerkerke, of Phillip, was charged with burglary and theft.
The court heard he had mental health issues.
Moerkerke, who represented himself, told the court that all would be revealed soon.
He also asked to be placed under the care of Corrective Services rather than ACT Mental Health, saying there was a woodworking shop at the jail and he wanted to make “matchstick stuff”.
Magistrate Maria Doogan told Moerkerke he could be unwell and needed a mental health assessment.
She ordered him to be sent to the mental health unit at Canberra Hospital in police custody.

I would advise against that...told the court that all would be revealed soon.
That's sort of what got him in trouble in the first place....
