Okay, but would they do it still if they'd seen your carcass and knew you were dead?

That's something I'm curious about. It's an established phenomena that many dogs get into such routines, awaiting their masters' return home at the same time each day.

But when I was watching that Richard Gere weepfest about the dog who waited at the train station for the guy every night for years and years after his character's death, I couldn't help wondering, if the family had brought the poor dog into the wake to see his dead body, would the dog still have done that? I was sad for the poor dog, all those years of melancholy longing for the impossible. If he'd known his master was dead, perhaps he'd have moved on?

I don't know either. But did you see the story last week about the funeral of the navy seal and his dog at the funeral? It seems this one certainly did. Dogs I think are far smarter than we give them credit.
