Rick Perry Fires At His Feet Again

Post by Lord Jim »

So today, Perry is supposed to unveil his tax reform plan. It's bold, innovative and comprehensive. It's supposed to show that he's seriously engaged about the economic problems the country faces.

So what does he do? the day before this, he steps all over his own message and drowns it out by out of the blue, deciding to revive the "birther" nonsense:

Rick Perry, birther? Texas governor suggests he's not sold on Obama's birthplace

WASHINGTON - Texas Gov. Rick Perry, struggling to claw back to prominence in the Republican presidential race, is renewing the so-called birther issue, suggesting in a new interview he harbours doubts that President Barack Obama was born in the United States.

"I don't have any idea," Perry told Parade magazine when asked if he believes the long-form birth certificate Obama released in April, largely to silence real estate mogul Donald Trump's assertions that the president wasn't born in the U.S., was authentic.
Related Items

"I had dinner with Donald Trump the other night," Perry said. "He doesn't think it's real."

When the Parade interviewer reminds Perry that he's seen Obama's birth certificate, Perry replied: "I don't know. Have I?"

Earlier this year, Trump delighted the "birthers," a neoconservative collection of conspiracy theorists, when he flirted with a presidential run and made repeated, high-profile suggestions that Obama was unlawfully holding office because he wasn't born stateside.

Trump seized upon the birther movement despite the fact that most Americans regard the unfounded allegations with a collective eye roll. The brash businessman said he was proud of himself when a visibly annoyed Obama announced he'd released his Hawaiian long-form birth certificate in order to put the boots to an issue he called "silliness."

On that front, anyway, Perry agreed with Obama in the Parade interview.

"It doesn't matter," he said. "He's the president of the United States. He's elected. It's a distractive issue."

Nonetheless, Orly Taitz, the so-called Queen of the Birthers, is endorsing Perry's candidacy. She told the ThinkProgress website that she believes if the Texas governor wins the Republican nomination, he'll use the birther issue to attack Obama.

Taitz has filed several unsuccessful lawsuits attempting to disqualify Obama, whose father was Kenyan, from holding office. A federal judge said last week he was fed up with the "Sisyphean quest to prove that Obama is using a fake Social Security number and a forged birth certificate" as he dismissed Taitz's latest lawsuit.

The birthers have equally vexed Obama.

He referred to them as "carnival barkers" in April amid persistent accusations from the movement's adherents that he's unlawfully occupying the White House because he was born in either Kenya or Indonesia.

From the last quote I highlighted, I think it's pretty obvious what Perry is trying to d here...he's trying to wink and nod to the Birthers, while at the same time trying not to look like a crank....

Unfortunately for Perry, that's a needle that just can't be threaded....

Having decided to touch this third rail, does he simply not understand that the press will now not permit him to talk about anything else, until he finally says something categorical? He will not be able to give a speech or an interview anywhere in the country, on any topic, without being buried under a non-stop barage of questions about this birther crap....

It was pure idiocy.

Perry is a real mystery to me. I cannot for the life of me understand how a man can be as successful in politics as this man has been when he seemingly understands so little about what goes in to making one politically successful.

I have to say that Rick Perry has been the single greatest disappointment to me of this political season...

I've never been a "passionate" Romney supporter, ( is there any such thing as a "passionate" Romney supporter?) and I was happy to see Perry enter the race. I didn't know a huge amount about him, but what I knew was all good...He'd been elected three times as Governor of Texas, the second most populous state in the Union, (each time with a significant percentage of the the Latino vote) he was good looking, an energetic speaker, he can raise boatloads of cash, and most importantly, on his watch his state had a record on what is likely to be by far the number one issue in the 2012, job creation, that was far and away the best in the country....

What was not to like? I was very much prepared to support Perry; in fact I expected that he would probably my candidate for the nomination. He looked on paper anyway, like a very formidable challenger to go up against Obama.

No more.

Within a day or two of getting in the race, was he talking about jobs? No, he was talking about evolution.... (ETA: Oh, and let's not forget that right out of the chute, he also accused the Republican appointed Fed Chairman of "treason" and offered to make him the guest of honor at a Texas style beat-down...)

I thought okay, he's just getting in, maybe he's a little rusty; he'll sharpen up...

But then it was just one boneheaded play after another, after another after another....

At this point he looks like a complete moron. Even with 10% unemployment, I don't think he could beat Obama. He raised 17 million last quarter, but I'd lay substantial odds that the bulk of that came in within the first two weeks of his announcing. I expect his fundraising figures for the next quarter will see a dramatic drop. This guy just ain't ready for Prime Time, and I seriously doubt whether he ever will be.

There was an article about this in this week's [Bloomberg's] Businessweek: The jobs that Perry "created" were, by and large, government jobs, not private sector. And government money is running out.
Be excellent to each other--and, party on, dudes!

Hahaha, Rick Perry. Romney could take some advice from Napoleon: "Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake." Keep talking, Rick! You're doing great!

I liked Peg Noonan's conclusion about Perry: he's a local guy, not national. And there is no way America is going to elect another Texan who has so much trouble putting a sentence together.

Read the actual quotes. Aside from "admitting" that he is friendly with Donald Trump (which drops him many notches in my view), there is nothing in this interview.

Do you believe that the long form birth certificate was authentic?

"I don't have any idea." An entirely appropriate and truthful response.

"Donald Trump doesn't think it's real." So what? Anybody who has followed this story know that Trump is an idiot, a megalomaniac, who will not even in a thousand lifetimes admit that the brouhaha he tried to create last year was based on stupidity.

When "...reminded that he had seen Obama's birth certificate..." Baloney. No one has actually seen it. We've all seen photocopies in the newspaper and on line. Is that "seeing it"? Who knows? WHo cares?

Finally, "It doesn't matter," he said. "He's the president of the United States. He's elected. It's a distractive issue."

There is nothing whatsoever in the exchange that suggests that Rick Perry is a "birther," or that he is not "sold" on Obama's birthplace, despite the headline.

Like most Americans, he simply does not care, one way or another, and indicated that to the reporter. The story is more an illustration of how desperate the MSM is to paint Perry as out of touch.

BTW, did I mention that Mitt's nomination is inevitable, as is his being sworn in as our 45th President?

Remember, a picture of something doesn't count. That means we've never sent men to the moon because all we've seen are pictures and film. Is that "seeing it"? Who knows? Who cares?

Once you've jumped onto the "anti-global warming" wagon and denied natural selection you've abandoned reason, logic and science.

The one prerequisite for running as a Republican.

Political campaign spending, while modest, is great for the economy.

It is the voluntary turning over of after-tax dollars to buy hotel rooms, multi-media advertising, printing, rental cars, and varioius services. It is almost exclusively spent in the U.S.

Truly, more money will be wasted over the next 14 months on Starbuck's latte than will be spent on all the political campaigns put together. I honestly don't know why people fret about it. It is obvious that you can't buy an election (losers frequently outspend winners), so what's the big deal?

Ironically, it is expected that the President will raise and spend more than a billion dollars campaigning for his own re-election (not counting the campaigning he is doing at taxpayer expense), and his campaign will undoubtely create more real private sector employment than all of his "stimulus" programs put together (if you exclude government contracts).

As a matter of fact, Americans will spend more money on Halloween candy this month then will be spent selecting the next President.

How strange it is to believe what is supported by evidence instead of what is supported by whatever you want to believe.

After 2000-2001 only stupid people, ignoramuses, and liars have denied global warming. The party which denies natural selection and global warming is too stupid to listen to.

The Democrats deserve a better party of opposition. You are shrieking idiots.

Bullshit.

Less than $2 billion is spent on Halloween candy. More than $5 billion was expended on the 2008 election.

I stand corrected.

Keld is right.

I shouldn't have specified "candy"...It's not just the candy, it's the costumes, and parties as well....

I'm not sure how that alters the validity of my basic point, however....
