“We think there has to be a solid conservative alternative to Mitt Romney,” Mr. Gingrich told WSC Radio in Charleston, S.C. “I’m the one candidate who can bring together national security conservatives the racist bigots, and economic conservatives libertarian lunatics, and social conservatives anti-gay religious nutters in order to make sure we have a conservative stupid nominee.”
Fixed that for you Newt, no charge.

Hahahahaha. Newt's "surge" in popularity is quite obviously the direct result of the GOP base desperately casting about for a candidate who is Not Mitt Romney. As the campaigns of wingnut darlings One-L Michele, Pizza Man and Rick "I'm-No-Horticulturalist" Perry all successively implode, the pool has gotten so small that they are forced to reach back into the last century to find their future candidate: an ethically-challenged has-been with a fanciful view of history who was dumped by his own party the last time he was in Congress.

Run, Newt, Run! That Tiffany's bill ain't gonna pay itself!

It shouldn't be all laughs, though. The anyone-but-Obama strain runs deeper and wider than does the anyone-but-Romney strain. When the Republicans finally settle on a nominee, people who were fervently opposed to that nominee will come out in droves and vote for him (or her, in the unlikely event that the nominee is a woman). No matter who the Republican nominee turns out to be, nothing is carved in stone for the Democrats.

The worst impeachable offense any President has ever been shown to have committed. It makes Watergate look like nothing.

We call the result "The Trail of Tears".

But Andrew Johnson was impeached (and survived removal by a single vote in the Senate) for violating a BS statute which was ultimately held unconstitutional. And Clinton was impeached for lying about blowjobs.

Mass slaughter? No problem. Condemning people to slow, agonizing deaths? No problem.

But get your dick sucked in the White House? Oh, the horror!

Once again, I feel compelled to be the voice of reality in this discussion...

Newt has no ground game in Iowa....the Iowas caucuses are only six weeks away and even if he has started to raise more money, (in what is traditionally the worst fundraising quarter for obvious reasons) he has no time to put one together...

Even as he is cresting nationally in support, he remains 25 points behind Romney in New Hampshire...(and The Union Leader endorsement doesn't mean anywhere near what it once did....the field is littered with GOP Presidential hopefuls over the past couple of decades who received it and didn't win New Hampshire, let alone the nomination)

As unloved as he is in many quarters, Mitt Romney will still, at the end of the day, emerge as the nominee.

No, but right now the clown show is just so hi-larious! Plenty of time to get down to business in the Spring; by August, the electorate won't even remember 2011 at all.

Iowa is irrelevant, as is New Hampshire. Newt's results in both states will be viewed nationally with the understanding that he didn't work too hard in Iowa and NH is Romney's to lose.

The most significant result of those early primaries will be the elimination of a few also-ran's, and maybe we'll see if Ron Paul intends to run as an independent. If he does, he will guarantee Barry's re-election.

Jim, I'll bet you $5 that Newt finishes within 5% of Mitt in NH (or better).

I seem to recall Rudy Giuliani using that strategy...

I just popped in to post about the Cain "reassessment" , but I see Guin beat me too it...

In politico-speak "reassessment" is code for, "I'm toast, but I'm trying to figure out the most graceful way to get out"....

Cain's lawyer made relevant points when he said this was a private matter, (after all this isn't an harassment issue) but unfortunately Herman had to shoot his mouth off again, stating categorically that it never happened....

That was pretty stupid, since a 13 year affair is likely to leave quite a paper trail....

I suspect Herman will tell us that he's decided he needs to spend more time with his family.... ;)

Yes, there is likely to be quite a paper trail:
The station said that Ms. White produced cellphone bills that included 61 phone calls or text messages to and from a number she said was for Mr. Cain’s private cellphone. When the station sent a text message to the number, Mr. Cain called back and acknowledged knowing Ms. White.

You would think Her-mann (and every politician) would learn it's never the bad act, but the lies about the act that get you in the end.
