Some advice from a Commie for us!
First, logistics (and by the way, the 22nd is a Sunday?). For sure, use the AeroExpress to get into the city proper...it runs every half hour ...if you do pretty well getting thru Passport Control, hoof it a bit, you can catch 7 a.m. one (schedule: http://www.aeroexpress.ru/en/sheremetyevo/schedule.htm)

This will drop you off at Belorusski Railway (but also Metro) station at 7:35 sharp...from there, jump on the GREEN line Metro (into the city) right there at Belosrusski Station) - see attached ...http://dl.dropbox.com/u/26846803/Moscow ... ussian.pdf

Get off at the third stop - Teatralnaya...you should be there reliably by 7:45

When you exit the Metro, you will be right near the Bolshoi...and Red Square, Kremlin, Tverskaya Street, etc. From here, you can read up on this site about "must sees" right in the inner city. Beyond what you will see right after you get off the Metro, you might want to take a casual stroll - taking in the sites along the way- down to the Christ the Savior Cathedral...it is beautiful, and the walkway crossing the river offers some nice views of the Kremlin, etc...

Might want to take in lunch in one of the very nice cafes/restaurants on Kamegerski Lane (Pereulok)...just a block up from where Tverskaya dead ends close to Red Square...
Pretty much a must do! We have a whole day in Moscow while in transit, a chance to see Red Square and the Bolshoi would be superb!!

It will be exciting.

Mind you, if the temperatures are potentially -20 degrees Celcius and below, I may decide that hypothermia is not a souvenir I want to return to Australia with and stay in the transit lounge.

... juz sayin'

I see they're preparing for our arrival, making it all nice and Xmassy there..

Police have told people in Scotland not to travel, as winds of up to 165mph (264km/h) affected the country, leaving more than 30,000 people without power.

As the Met Office issued its highest warning, a red alert, hundreds of schools have shut and bridge and road closures are causing disruption.

England, Wales and Northern Ireland were also being hit by wind and rain.

Winds of up to 90mph (144km/h) and possible blizzard conditions are expected in north Scotland into Friday.

The severe weather hit many other parts of the UK

That picture of the exploding wind turbine is pretty spectacular.

But the Scots have given their own name to this storm... they've called it Hurricane Bawbag, gotta love those guys!

Either no one in Scotland has power, or their lines are in fabulous condition ----- we had winds far less than 165 mph with our Halloween Nor-Easter/Blizzard and millions were without power throughout New England.

And Gob, believe me, being without power for days on end in cold snowy weather is not fun. Neither is having your home and property innundated by waves and water. Sure its cool to look at -- no one loves a good storm more than I. But its really not so cool when its actually happening to you.

Here you go Guin.
Meanwhile, tens of thousands of properties are still without electricity, with the possibility that some homes could have no power until Sunday.

Scottish Hydro said 70,000 customers were cut off this morning, down from 105,000 last night, while Scottish Power had 2,000 customers ''off-grid''.

There were 400 separate incidents disrupting the electricity network in the north of Scotland, including the western and northern islands, equivalent to two months' work in just one day, Scottish Hydro said.
Our holiday is at the other extremity of the UK, so we should not be affected by any of this.

We fly out a week today!!!

If you're going to be away for five weeks you may want to consider appointing an acting Admin....

If he wants to come back to a board with no participants, that would be a great idea.

Fortunately both Daisy and Reality Bites have full admin access.

We're taking an i-pad and a laptop with us and will hopefully have full net access over there, so I'll be looking in on occasion too.

Gwen can put in an offer for admin services if she wishes, I'm sure it would get full and thorough consideration here...

Thousands of people have attended the biggest anti-government rally in the Russian capital Moscow since the fall of the Soviet Union.

As many as 50,000 people gathered on an island near the Kremlin to condemn alleged ballot-rigging in parliamentary elections and demand a re-run.

Other, smaller rallies took place in St Petersburg and other cities.

Communists, nationalists and Western-leaning liberals turned out together despite divisions between them.

The protesters allege there was widespread fraud in Sunday's polls though the ruling United Russia party did see its share of the vote fall sharply.

Please keep any protests away from Moscow Sheremetyevo International Airport next weekend!

Christmas shopping is a ritual I hate until it is finished, and mine is now as near to finished as it can be when going to the UK next week.

Good luck to the rest of you. I'm beat.

The Met Office has issued two weather warnings of snow on Friday with up to four inches expected on higher ground in south Wales.

Image

There are flood warnings for the lower Dee Valley in Llangollen and south Pembrokeshire. The rivers Wye, upper Severn and the Usk are on alert.

Meanwhile, trains from Cardiff to Bridgend were disrupted after lightning hit signalling equipment.

There are speed limits on the Britannia Bridge and the M48 Severn Bridge.

BBC Wales' weather forecaster Derek Brockway said: "For Thursday and on into Friday there's low pressure coming in from the Atlantic.

"It looks like we could miss the worst of the gales but we could be in for the first significant snow of the winter.

"There could be problems on the roads on Friday morning with several centimetres possible, particularly on higher ground."

Fuck me pink!!

Went to the bank this morning, having warned them last week I would be making a large withdrawal from our savings account.

"We're very sorry Mr Taff, but we have had a run on this morning, would you mind $50 notes?"
