Some advice for a closeted GOP mayor...

Post by Scooter »

...don't spend embezzled money in gay sex shops :loon
A Republican mayor in Mississippi admitted this week that he was gay after an audit revealed that he spent taxpayer money at a gay adult store in Canada.

Greg Davis was elected as the mayor of Southaven in 1997 on a platform of conservative “family values,” but he says he recently realized that he was gay.

“At this point in my life and in my career, while I have tried to maintain separation between my personal and public life, it is obvious that this can no longer remain the case,” the mayor, now in his third term, told The Commercial Appeal.
Davis claimed that he has already paid $96,000 of the of more than $170,000 in expenses that state officials allege he improperly billed the city for.

Thousands of dollars were spent on lavish meals and liquor, but it’s a $67 charge that Davis made to Priape, “Canada’s premiere gay lifestyle store and sex shop,” while on a recruiting trip that has gotten the most attention.

The mayor said that he didn’t remember what he bought while at the shop.
Yeah, I can imagine that porn star replica dildo must have completely slipped his mind, after being slipped somewhere else.

Hey, cut the guy some slack....

It could be that he buys so many things in porno shops, that he just doesn't happen to remember what he bought in that particular one.... :)

I can imagine him trying to recall:

"Gee was it the black dildo? The four speed vibrator? The Jeff Stryker Box Set? The Leonardo DiCaprio Inflatable Doll?"

What does being queer have to do with it? He stole a couple hundred thousand dollars of taxpayer money.

Total red herring.

It had nothing to do with it, except that the way he spent some of the money exposed him as one of those hypocritical closet cases who threw gay people under the bus in order to advance their own careers.

Being Mayor for 14 years probably imbued him with an arrogant sense of entitlement...(it also suggests this spending was done over a period of time, not in some sort of sudden "spree"...he may not remember what he bought at that store because it was a number of years ago.)

And even though the story says "billed" I have to believe that this had to be some sort of city issued credit card that he was provided with...(If he was actually turning in receipts to the city accountants for reimbursement for purchases at porno stores, he's got a much bigger problem then "hypocrisy"...serious mental issues)

He probably had this card, and just got in the habit of using it like it was his own personal card. (And after no one questioned the charges over a period of time, he probably became progressively more reckless in using it.)

Does this even qualify as "news" anymore? Stories about publically anti-gay "family values" Republican officials being outed as hypocritical closet cases come around every Tuesday, pretty much. Even here in (mostly) gay-friendly New Jersey, we've got this story locally about the GOP mayor (and 2008 congressional candidate) stiffing (haha) his rent boy; there was the meth-for-sex Colorado sheriff a coupla few weeks ago; the Indiana state rep giving his cell phone to his boytoy, the upstate NY congressman trolling Craigs List, the Puerto Rico senator posting his pix, not to mention Larry Craig and Mark Foley. Public office just seems to bring out the gay in the GOP.

McGreevey did not run as an anti-gay/"family values" candidate -- exactly the opposite, he lobbied for and signed the first NJ Domestic Partnership Act. I don't know whether admitting his sexual orientation alone would have denied him a second term as governor. But putting his boyfriend on the payroll in charge of homeland security, and then firing him, thereby making himself the target of a sexual harassment claim, were not smart moves politically.

(BTW, I met McGreevey a few times when he was running for governor; he said all the right things, took our money and then stabbed us in the back on certain important legislative items. Good riddance, I say.)
