A Santorum Surge?

It is appropriate that three candidates who have been seriously running from the beginning finish 1, 2 and 3. Romney has a solid campaign and credentials. He is the first choice of few, but no one questions that he got in the race to become president. Santorum is a serious politician who also got in the race to try to become president and help make his agenda items important discussion items in the race. Paul has never been a serious threat for president, but he runs to make Rs at least examine their libertarian roots.

With the exception of Huntsman, none of the other candidates really were seriously running for president. Gingrich, I'm convinced, got in the race to revitalize his income potential for books, speeches, etc. Bachmann wanted to try to be the next Palin and get rich, using a presidential race as the launching pad. Similarly, Cain wanted to use the race to gain name recognition to sell stuff. Perry is a real politician that possibly could have been a contender, except he was woefully unprepared so it is hard to say he was serious about his run. (As Juma Ikangaa, a great marathoner, said: "The will to win means nothing without the will to prepare." )

The party has several possible candidates who appear superior to the top three in this race (note Huntsman appears superior too and his sails can't find any wind), but the top two at least are serious politicians who are actually seeking the presidency, and both also appear to be level-headed types. That was Obama's quality that closed the deal on his election -- voters judged that he was a reasonable and serious thinker, in addition to his other apparent qualities.

Poor Rick Santorum. The guy can't seem to catch a break. From his own mouth, that is.

For the second time in as many days, Rick Santorum waded into the issue of gay marriage, suggesting it was so important for children to have both a father and mother that an imprisoned father was preferable to a same-sex parent.

Citing the work of one anti-poverty expert, Santorum said, "He found that even fathers in jail who had abandoned their kids were still better than no father at all to have in their children's lives."

So better a father in prison than two mothers. Perhaps someone should have asked if he believed the converse to be true i.e. better a mother in jail than two fathers. Although, the notion of two men raising a child together would probably make his head explode...

If the quoted sentence was all that he said, then he was comparing a family with an absent, incarcerated father with a single mother. His statement makes no reference whatsoever to a "same-sex parent." Furthermore, what he said is not particularly controversial.

Allowing gays to marry and raise children, Santorum said, amounts to "robbing children of something they need, they deserve, they have a right to. You may rationalize that that isn't true, but in your own life and in your own heart, you know it's true."

Something that I've never understood about this line of thinking. How can same-sex parents be "robbing" their children of something they could never possibly have had? Is Santorum, and others who think like him, saying that those children would have been better off never having been born, rather than being raised by a same-sex couple?

No, but the opposite is clearly true. If Santorum didn't choose to come fishing in our pond so much, queers, as you so quaintly put it, wouldn't be giving him a second thought. But that doesn't seem to be enough to stop him over obsessing about us at every opportunity, does it?

With rumors of an Iowa upset dribbling out over the last week, the official vote tallies now show Santorum coming out from behind Romney. But votes in eight precincts appear to have been wiped away. Should there be a run-off?

Santorum has recruited Gary Bauer to do an ad for him. Is there anyone whose support Santorum can hope to gain that isn't completely creeped out by this guy?



I'm pretty sure he was Peter Jackson's inspiration for Gollum.

Actually, it looks like that's a super pac ad...

Bauer certainly ain't my cup of tea, (he actually ran for the nomination himself a few years ago and got trounced) but the intent of this ad is obviously to target specifically undecided (and those who may be leaning towards Gingrich) social and evangelical voters in South Carolina, among whom he does enjoy some credibility.
